Today is another footballing lesson for Joan - it's the start of the group stages of the Champions League! And now, ANOTHER footballing lesson for Joan - today is the start of the group stages of the Europa League! The Europa League is the second-tier competition of European club football, ranking below the Champions League. This is the competition for the teams in Europe who didn't make the top spots in their individual leagues last season. For example, Arsenal, Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers finished fifth, sixth and seventh in last season's Premier League - so they qualify for this season's Europa League. They are the only English teams taking part this season. There are 48 teams in total, divided into 12 groups of four, and the structure is very similar to the Champions League. Each team plays the other three teams in their group, home and away. The group winners and runners-up advance to the knockout round of 32, where they are joined by the eight third-placed teams of the 2019–20 UEFA Champions League group stage (a very odd rule). The knockout rounds continue until two teams are left, and in May they will play a final in Gdansk, Poland. Europa League matches are always played on Thursdays. This competition does not have the same prestige as the Champions League because, well, it's basically a competition of also rans. A lot of these teams would rather play in the Champions League (Manchester Utd and Arsenal for example). It's also been said that there are far too many teams taking part, leading to a glut of fixtures and general apathy from fans. I won't bother listing the groups, because, let's face it, no one here is hugely interested.
