Their promotional piece for Stripes said: "Expanded and Remastered Limited Edition CD Release, September 14 2021".
Maybe it should have said "Orders accepted from September 14 2021, for release date of September 28 2021".
A release date used to mean the day the record stores would have the item in stock for customers to come and buy. Sometimes there would be lines outside Tower Records or wherever, with fans knowing the release date was the day they could get their hands on the disc.
These days, a release date is sometimes just the day for customers to release their money, with the item remaining unavailable till a few weeks later.

This seems like little more than disingenuous whine in search of a problem, or did you go down to your local Tower Records and stand in line for this cd on the "release date"?

In all fairness, you left out the information at the beginning of this thread that says "starts shipping on September 14." From the reports in this very thread, a number of people have already received their cds, suggesting that shipping did indeed start on September 14. For a mail order business, it seems to me that the date a new cd is first available for sale and also starts shipping is reasonably described as the "release date."

The CD in question has not started shipping yet and no-one has received a copy.

My misreading, my apologies.

Ok, I shall try this again, with respect to Stripes. To be sure, I still find this to be a disingenous whine in search of a problem. To compare the "release" of "Stripes" by a mail order business to the days (long ago) when you stood in line at Tower records on the "release date" is simply disingenuous.

The Stripes announcement, if I am correct, clearly said, ordering on Sept. 14 and shipping on Sept. 28. No one should have been deceived. Under the current commercial circumstances, changing Shipping to Release Date would seem to be pointless.

No, you're not correct. The promotional piece said ""Expanded and Remastered Limited Edition CD Release, September 14 2021". It said nothing about any other date.
The main reason for mentioning it is if people know ahead of time, they can adjust their order timing accordingly. Other readily-available items in the order will now be delayed for weeks when they need not have been.
Enough's been said on this. Over and out.

Sad. Click on the link you've just provided, click on the Stripes cover, and then scroll down. There is the promotional piece they sent out, which for many was the only info they saw before ordering from any number of sources.

Just got done spinning the first CD. "Our Time," "The Battle of Grimball's Landing" and the film version of the closing credits are worth the price alone, not to mention the superior sound quality overall. Beautifully done all around, including Jeff Bond's notes.

One small thing to add: As Jeff writes, James Horner was indeed nominated for the Grammy in the category of Best Instrumental Composition for a Motion Picture or for Television. He also won it, besting Danny Elfman for "Dick Tracy," Hans Zimmer for "Driving Miss Daisy," Menken/Ashman for "Little Mermaid," and Angelo Badalamenti for "Twin Peaks." I was really happy when I heard about his win---totally deserving of a major accolade like that.

He also got a Golden Globe nomination, in contention with with Ennio Morricone for "Casualties of War," Dave Grusin for "Fabulous Baker Boys," "John Williams for "Born on the Fourth of July," and winner Menken/Ashman for "Mermaid."

The Academy Awards nominated Horner that year for "Field of Dreams," another classic.

Really fantastic job on this project, Mike, Neil, Jeff and everyone. Many thanks.

You have to be little smart, I ordered Always alongside Glory. Ideally I might have ordered Wrath of Khan too, but I know they are waiting new stock which would have delayed my order.

That said, it's a shame La La Land didn't put some other Horner discs at reduced price, I would have been tempted. Maybe next time.

Got my copy today, and both discs are marred by lots of marks & scratches (especially Disc 1). frown So much so that it caught me off guard. I've sent a request to LLL for a replacement. What a bummer, I was so excited to listen tonight.

Received my copy today. I noticed that none of the Worth a Life cues on the CD appear to be the take that was used in the film. Has anyone else noticed this?

That's correct. We couldn't find it. You've won this months "No Prize!" smile

That's the short answer. Below is the long answer.

Here's a little history on "Glory." We started work on it in 2017 with a set of DATs that didn't have slates. With so many unused cues we sought out the digital multi-tracks. Despite the original album saying it was from analog tapes we never found any. On top of that, I suspect the methodology was to record 24-track analog and mix on 32-track digital. That lines up with our tapes and we wouldn't want to reinvent the wheel anyway, since "Glory" sounds so fantastic so having the digital was fine.

Anyway, with the digital multi-track we had slates and I could ID the unused cues. Great, wonderful! However, even with all of these tapes, there was one cue that was released on the OST that was not on our session DAT and was not on our multi-track mix reels. We did an extensive search at the studio and nothing turned up.

My guess is there was a pick-up session. I checked with the AFM, but they didn't have a list of recording dates. I have a copy of a 20+ year old fax they sent me with one date on it that corresponded with the reels we did have, so that wasn't much help. As an aside, the dates in the booklet are derived from the multi-track reels we used.

For the cue we didn't have any recordings of we used the album master. For "Worth A Life" we present the three circled takes from the digital multi-track with the one that's closest to what's heard in the film in the main program.

I hope you can see we searched high and low on this project for a few years. Sometimes weird things happen. And you know what else? I'm in the middle of another project right now and the exact same thing has happened. I have multiple tapes with the entire score except one cue which again was on the OST, thank goodness.

Thanks for listening!

Neil

Perhaps it’ll turn up someday. Until then, this release certainly suffices. I am glad and grateful the project came to fruition and to have the end result in my hands.

If this board had a "Like" button I would click it for both of those messages. I hope this "thank you" will suffice.

I love love love stories like this, and truly admire your attention to detail and dedication to tracking down everything necessary to make a definitive album. Thank you for everything you do!

Can you tell us which cue it was that you had to pull from the album master because it too was recorded at the pick-up sessoin?

I'd rather not. My hope is for people to enjoy the album without all the "inside" knowledge and drama distracting from the music.
