"Earthquake" is indeed a bad movie. Universal made-for-TV bad. But, it's David Lean caliber work compared to "Airport 1975," Universal's other monster hit for autumn 1974. I saw "Earthquake" the Friday eventing after Thanksgiving in the Skyway Theater in downtown Minneapolis. Across the street "Airport 1975" was at the Mann Theater (a 1960s roadshow house) and it too had a huge line down the block waiting to buy tickets. At the same time "The Godfather, Part II" was filling two downtown movies houses at the Academy and State theaters. So good taste was having a moment too.

I find that all films from the early to mid 70's had a TV movie feel to them.
It was a style. An artistic choice. A particular esthetic.
I don't look at them with the current perceptions of the here and now because I was there in that period--thus that feel doesn't bother me in the slightest.

To put it another way, you can't dislike an impressionist painting for not looking like a photograph.

I remember seeing this on the big screen in 1974 with my brother and our parents. We all thought it was brilliant. Was that simply because of our Scottish working-class low intelligence?

Any idea why this has never been re-issued? No download, no streaming...

I presume Varese sat on the rights until they expired. I guess this would be Intrada territory now?

Any delay now (to a reissue or expansion) is probably down to those dreaded WILLIAMS PEOPLE.
I think I read around here recently that he isn't that interested in revisiting his earlier scores like STORY OF A WOMAN, THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS, DRACULA, EIGER SANCTION etc.

I miss the days of the FSM label, when John Williams' approval wasn't needed (or asked big grin ) and we got all those early scores like Penelope, John Goldfarb, A Guide for the Married man etc.
If they hadn't been released back then, I believe there's NO WAY they would be released now!
Williams would never approve of them!

I still don't understand why albums like Earthquake, The Eiger Sanction & Dracula haven't been re-released. They were owned by MCA records who released them on LP in the days before CD, & licensed to Varese for CD release. MCA were bought up by UMG, who now owns the albums.

I think for the very same reason Rameau.
Williams has got too much clout now over his own music!
It needs to be placed in the hands of the labels or the fans wink

Well, many of those MCA LPs that were briefly licensed to Varèse have never been reissued since – Goldsmith's "MacArthur," Sarde's "Ghost Story," Morricone's "The Thing," etc. I don't think Williams is stopping those!

So I'm guessing something else must be up.

Apologies if I've asked this before, but do I correctly recall that when broadcast on TV (1976?) the End Titles (The City Sleeps) had a fugue-like quality, in which the five-note motif was echoed?

Any idea who played the solo trumpet on the album track, ‘Something for Remy’? Several horn players are listed on the La-La Disaster box — top billing Malcolm McNab, Joe Burnett, above five others. Just curious as it’s a beautiful performance.

Edit, perhaps answering my own question: I don't know if this is the gentleman, but Mr. McNab is a legend! https://malcolmmcnab.com
