I saw this over the weekend. The score as heard in the film was surprisingly good. It certainly has elements of Bernstein's original but on its own it's very good and has some good moments that stand out, particularly the action sequences.
As far as the film is concerned...
I for one didn't laugh out loud one time, but that's not to say I didn't find the movie somewhat agreeable. It certainly does not have the goofy and unabashedly fun tone of the original. But all of the actors and their characters are good and well done. The production values are good and for what its worth, a decent family film for the holidays. But at the same time, I was bored at times and it's basically a rehash of the first movie with some exceptions.
Really good score, mediocre film that's a safe bet for dragging the kids to a somewhat agreeable but been there done that sequel.

That's three sequels in a row rehashing the original movie.
Not really that much you can do beyond having a supernatural despot or army of dead reawaken and have to be taken down by the Ghostbusters. It's a pretty small playing field. And veer too far off course and you upset/lose the original fan base.

Well just goes to show how everyone has an opinion - I actually really loved it and laughed out loud numerous times. Thought the young girl was spectacular and even though I agree it dragged in a few places it was in general a lot of fun. I definitely am with you that the score was really good, too - first new score in the past couple of years I've actually sought out and wanted to listen to all the way through. I'm sure a lot of that has to do with Simonsen using some of Bernstein's original material, but I agree it did stand out in a good way.
Weird that ImportCDs cancelled my order for the CD while they continue to take orders for it.
Interesting. The same thing happened to me when I ordered the Ghostbusters CD on Amazon. I ended up having to order it a second time. I guess Zuul was not pleased.

They got 130 episodes out of the cartoon so there's plenty of places they can go. There's all sorts of spirits, demons and legends of culture and folklore they could mine from.

Yes, while it was initially cool to revisit the villains from the original, it was ultimately disappointing. There is just a ton of stuff they can do.
In fact, they did! I thought the first half was excellent - it was in the world of Ghostbusters while being different enough to stand on it's own. In the second half they threw that all out the window and the movie relied (lazily) on blatant fan service. It wasn't even organic to the film - just one reference after another jammed in.
I didn't hate it, but I was very disappointed. Especially since I loved the first half and it was almost painful to watch them not even know what they had. They didn't need to rely on the original movie at all.
I could have easily watched a tv series with the characters in this movie that took place in that small town. That's probably where it belonged.

Hence why The Real Ghostbusters was always the best thing the original film ever gave us.

Also agree, I read one review that said the audience is basically this meme for each bit of nostalgia they show in the film, and not much more beyond that - some even compared it to Rise of Skywalker. I had the same feelings as you about the second half.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad fans love it, and that it's doing well as we'll get more GB films etc. I'll still buy the CD, and probably pick up the bluray at some point.

I'm a fan and I love it!My mom and I just got back from seeing it. I thought it had a lot of heart and the nostalgia worked for me. And it had me engaged through the entire film. It was great seeing all these iconic things back on the big screen again.
The way I see it is that we could have gotten what we did, or another remake like the 2016 movie with absolutely zero ties to the original cast aside for a few awkward cameos. Taking it in a completely new direction was too risky.
I’ll take what we got with Afterlife. I thought it had a lot of heart and I loved it. I think a sequel to THAT can take the franchise in a different direction now that they’ve established the new characters.
To reference another Bill Murray classic… baby steps.

I've seen it 3 times, and absolutely love it. One of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Nostalgia...yes. Fun...yes. Entertainment...yes. Good score...yes. Good characters...yes. Nothing about it that I would change.
Also, I’m STILL waiting for my soundtrack order to ship from Amazon.
Seems to be happening a lot lately.
I just noticed that Amazon isn't selling this directly. It's sold by a third party and ships from the UK. I haven't found any US retailer carrying it. Or if there even is a US produced CD.
