Libido (Ernesto Gastaldi, 1965)

A landmark giallo for having screenwriter Ernesto Gastaldi in the director’s chair. I also ordered a signed postcard from Film Treasures of the poster as recognition of Gastaldi’s influence in the genre. The monochrome film has a tiny cast (I mean in number smile), just four of them, including the future Rene Mathis as the young heir to an estate fearful of manipulation by the estate’s administrator and also of going down the same sexual madness as his dead dad. Dynamics between the characters change by the minute as you try to figure out who’s trying to shaft whom.

Funky music - no, quite a traditional but Italian-flavoured Rusticelli score
Twist ending - yes
Witness of murder - yes
Striptease - yes
Killer’s POV - no, I think that was a few years off yet
Man slaps woman - no. But man slaps man a time or two.
Overloud or inappropriate music - no, a haunting little music box theme that recurs in the score
Outrageous title - not really
J&B bottle - none in sight
Naked woman - not quite, in fact no nudity that I can recall
Death by stabbing - no
Red herring - yes
Black-gloved killer - yes, an early version
Goofy police inspector - no cops in the cast
Important picture - absent
Woman takes bath or shower - no nudity, remember?
Blackmail - nothing so sophisticated
Gay/lesbian character - ditto
Important memory - I’m going to allow it
Random scene in Italian - nope, all English-dubbed
Ooh ooh music - nope
Death by razor - again nope
Childhood trauma - yes, very much so, and involving Jiminy Cricket
Killer’s footsteps - no, only some ridiculous plot-boosting, thoroughly unrealistic ones

So seven GB points, not bad for such an early effort.

It’s the third entry chronologically in my giallo bible, after the two Bavas, The Girl Who Knew Too Much and Blood and Black Lace.

So far a Goofy Police Inspector has featured in “Suspicious Death of a Minor” and “The Weapon, the Hour, the Motive”. Accordingly, I’m claiming the prize money that I’ve put up. I’m a Yorkshireman, so you didn’t miss out on much.

Occhiali Neri/Dark Glasses (2022)

The latest, if not last, swipe at this genre begins promisingly enough, with a
solar eclipse signaling a descent into uncommon darkness-then a bit of bloody
murder-and now imagine a routine giallo minus fashion, style, glamour, wit
(or even black humor), suspense, plot twists, production value, theatricality,
and even basic horror- and here we are.
Directed by Dario Argento, or maybe the teen who bags your groceries.
Major WTF scene comes when our protagonists (blind hooker and Chinese
orphan) fleeing the killer in the woods, stumble into a nasty nest of
snakes because, erm…snakes are scary? Don’t worry; this has nothing to
do with the sequence or the rest of the film…
For a little horror, Argento rips off his own Suspiria (already ripped off by
Fulci in the moronic The Beyond). And earns his own dunce cap.

Funky music-techno, ok but neither funky or groovy
Twist ending-not reaching that high
Witness of murder-no
Striptease-no
Killer POV-yes
Man slaps woman- no
Overloud music- “danger” motif is an increasingly loud, monotonous
beat that had me going for the remote, congratulations
Outrageous title-nay
J&B-too late for that
Naked woman-brief toplessness but no
Stabbing-yes
Red herring-not even
Black gloves- unavoidable yes
Goofy inspector- no, more typically useless (although one gets to ask
“Did you notice anything to justify such a horrible murder?”)
Important picture-no
Baths or showers- no, actually a smelly character is a “plot point “
Blackmail-no
Gay character-no
Scene in Italian- whole thing with subtitles
Ooh ooh music- forget it
Death by razor- no
Childhood trauma-no
Killer’s footsteps-yes

Five points for the most unsurprising elements, wow.

Eyes down quackers, Hasnt anybody won even a bloody line yet let alone a full house?
Looks like the jackpot is carried over again to next month.

Doris down the front has forgotten her felt pen, anyone got a spare?

The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave(1970)
With Anthony Steffen and Giacomo Rossi Stuart

Steffen is a toff , who feels guilty for his wife's death, some years ago. He also thinks she was having an affair. He goes off his trolly on several occasions. Especially seeing red headed women( reminds him of his wife). He's spent several times in the nut house. You are convinced he's the killer for most of the film, until one of those ' it can't be him, in two places and the conspiracy emeges. Someone is after his wedge but who .

Funky music= = more groovy than funky
Twist ending= I think so
Witness of murder= yes
Striptease= yes in a club, from a coffin and one amateur
Killer’s POV= briefly, not as important here
Man slaps woman= yes, a couple of good cracks
Overloud or inappropriate music= wouldn't say so. There was an iffy song performed at a garden party, though
Outrageous title= not really. It sums the film up, nicely
J&B bottle= yes within the first few minutes
Naked woman= plenty
Death by stabbing= yes
Red herring= possibly if you count thinking it was Steffen for 3/4 of the film
Black gloved killer= yes, briefly also yellow ones
Goofy police inspector= hardly any coppers in sight
Important picture= niet
Woman takes bath or shower=no, a stinky bunch
Blackmail= sort of but not essential to main plot
Gay/lesbian character= no
Important memory= yes, well it was important to the one having it, less sp to the viewer
Random scene in Italian= no
Ooh ooh music= no
Death by razor= no but knife, poison, snake bite
Childhood trauma= nope
Killer’s footsteps= no

So 12 ar a push, a couple brief examples, but what the heck.

Hang on now, are we being compared to a bunch of seniors sitting around
ritualistically engaging in questionable entertainment with low odds of
satisfaction? In the midst of a larger group of repetitive, whingey old folk?
“Bingo”

I knew people like that at school and work. smile

The Blood Stained Butterfly(1971)
With Helmut Berger and Evelyn Stewart
One that relies more on story than a few slash ' em ups. Several iffy characters for you to point the finger at, until you change your mind.

Funky music = is Tchaikovsky funky?
Twist ending= a double whammy, I would say
Witness of murder= yes
Striptease= yes
Killer’s POV= yes but nit prolonged
Man slaps woman= don't think so
Overloud or inappropriate music=no, it's Tchaikovsky and Ferrio
Outrageous title= almost, but not when you see it's relevance
J&B bottle= yes
Naked woman= yes
Death by stabbing= yes
Red herring= not really
Black gloved killer= yes but not black
Goofy police inspector=chief is a bit of a tit but Goofy, no
Important picture= no
Woman takes bath or shower= no,another whiff bunch
Blackmail= a hint
Gay/lesbian character= an allusion
Important memory=no
Random scene in Italian
Ooh ooh music= not a sniff
Death by razor= no
Childhood trauma= no
Killer’s footsteps= briefly

Only 9 and a couple of maybe.

In order to preserve this thread which is apparently full of good
Morriconians, with a bit of humor and no spaceship references,
I’m going to up the stakes-
For the first player to (legitimately) find a giallo film that crosses
the 20 point mark, I will personally reward……
One barely used absolutely FREE Blu-ray of the truly LATEST film
from giallo godfather D. Argento that the New York Times called
“a film from 2022” and Reg Llama of Brixton called “totally in
synchronized sound” In widescreen and color!
Good luck!

A generous offer, and probably quite secure!

The hunt either begins or continues…

Let me see if i can find Doris down the front a pen.
