Incidentally, the McNeely recording for Varèse is extremely good.

Agreed!

I was very happy when Varese released this new recording of NBNW. The sound quality was very much more improved and vibrant. John McNeelys passionate conducting and the orchestra gives a tour de force performance !

Is this now OOP?

The only thing that I found lacking in the McNeely is the performances of the main theme, which of course are a problem in every single release of this score, for one reason or another. All the other underscore is done really well, so it's strange.

the tenor of this thread has evolved into an accusation of treachery to filmscorehood if you haven't bought this version of the score.

If this is in response to my questioning anyone's excuse for not buying this CD, let me assure you my post was made in jest.

Fret not - I tend not to mention the Stasi if I'm being deadly serious about something.

(Speaking by the way as someone who enjoys the main title when it's playing but broadly forgets about it when it isn't, and who can't readily bring to mind a note of the underscore. I enjoyed that mash up with Star Wars, though.)

I didn't buy it, but i don't label myself a "film score connoisseur" either.

I lean toward the Laurie Johnson album.

When I saw this comment from OnyaB, I thought, "hey, I haven't listened to that re-recording in years, but isn't the tempo just a little too poky, too short etc. etc.?" (I first had it on vinyl in the 80's, and picked up the CD pretty much as soon as I got a player - it was the only game in town for my first favorite Herrmann score.)

I've just given it a listen on Spotify and I must say it holds up better than I remember, even given some distortion, instrumental balance and performance issues. It really is a terrific summation of the score - at about the same length as the original Mercury Vertigo album, which is also a great program.

I wouldn't trade it for the Intrada or the recent McNeely recording, but I'm glad I still have it and it's a good take on the score.

Screen Archives still has it. Just ordered, but you never know with them.

There are also some copies available on Amazon. Click Roadshow's link above and you'll find Intrada's version listed as well, with some used and new copies available for about 20 smackers.

thanks for the link.. Phew!...I just got what seems to be the penultimate copy .
Luckily the seller is one that I know, and a good one, so the price was very honest (just 1$ more).
It's crazy..you have some things on the shopping list for years..and then you gotta run after them!
So many cd's , so little time.
I think I got lazy with this one because I am actually very happy with the McNeely re-recording but anyway, it's fixed.

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but is this Warner Archive CD the same master as the Intrada CD, or is it just a rehash of the earlier Rhino version?

Thanks for posting this. I never got around to ordering Intrada's release because there have been so many other releases over the last few years, and by the time I tried, it was too late. This will be better than nothing. Thanks!

Roadshowfan - sure sounds like the Warner Archive edition is the Intrada edition as I listen on Spotify. And it follows the lead of some other scores originally released on specialty labels now on Warner Archive (like Gremlins and Salem's Lot). The digital album is also exactly the same length as the Intrada.

Um, and the same tracklist in the same order.

So, not so much going out of print but available after Intrada's edition is gone as a CD-R or digital album.

Thanks for the reply, Sean. I thought it looked like the Intrada disc but didn't want to make any rash assumptions!

I don't suppose the notes (if indeed there are any) with the Warner CD-R will be as extensive as Intrada's...

The digital one has a digital booklet

I have the Laurie version both vinyl and CD, the Rhino version, and the Intrada version. Of course the latter is the best out there and highly recommended.

I too, am surprised that many fans have not picked up this version but I do understand the need to pay bills too. I was unable to get the last release of Cliffhanger and I'm still waiting for a re-release of that one.

Bernard Herrmann's score for NBNW is nothing short of brilliance. It was a soundtrack that I was so thrilled to finally have in my collection, and that it is treated as if it was made of egg shells.

I'm sure it will have a re-release again some day but, if you have the money, why wait.

For what it's worth, and apologies if this has been mentioned before, the McNeely new recording has apparently been released digitally too!
