Oh, how much I hate Quicktime.

Anyway, I've spent hours downloading three STAR WARS fan-films from theforce.net, and none of them will play. I open them, and a box pops up saying something along the lines of, "You may experience a problem playing a video track in [insert film name here]. Your computer does not have the compressor required."

If I click Continue, I can hear the audio just fine, but the video just stays a solid white screen.

What kind of compressor is it talking about, and where can I find it? Would upgrading to the current Quicktime help? I'm not sure which version I have now, but I have been able to play fan-films from the same site before.

It all depends on what decompressor QuickTime wants. Are you running the VERY latest version of Quicktime? I suspect you're not, because the fan films over there usually play fine for me.

I just checked, and my Quicktime is Version 4.1.

The warning box doesn't say any specific type of compressor. It just says the "compressor required" could not be found.

QuickTime is up to version 6 now. You can download the latest version here:

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/qt/

It sounds as though you need a codec that's either included with a later version of QuickTime, or needs to be obtained from elsewhere. I'd consult the source of the fan film in question.

I hope so. I tried them on my brother's computer, which has QuickTime 5.1, and they worked fine. But when I installed 5.1 on my computer, I still had the same problem, so I'm worried it's something that might be missing from the computer itself and not QuickTime.

But, I will try QuickTime 6 first and see what happens. Hopefully, that will solve everything.

Be sure to thoroughly uninstall your old version before installing the new one. That will make sure that Apple gives you ALL the files, not just the latest ones.
