Hello all out there in Soundtrack Land:

So, I never got this lp when it first came out, never saw the movie either. I am not a Mancini completist. Though I do think he wrote some lovely themes here and there, such as THE MOLLY MAGUIRES, I have never found him to be what I might term a creator of comprehensive scores, with interlocking developed themes.

So, how does his score for VISIONS OF EIGHT compare to the rest of his work? Is it just unrelated themes? I notice it is now available as an import on SAE, and I'm considering getting it.

Awaiting input...

Thanks.

Well, here are some samples that you can hear and make up your own mind about:

Olympic Village

Pretty Girls

IMHO, it's one of the best items in his catalog, well worth picking up.

I'm afraid I can only offer a few memories, as I no longer have the LP. I remember that "March of the Olympians" was served up in two different versions; one was a swinging big band rendition, and the other a march variation with syncopated accents, similar to something like Williams' 1941 march, although not as light. I also remember a really pretty piece ("Soft Flight") for high, suspended string chord, with the melody is slowly played by... is it a harpsichord, a zither? (It's the plinky-sounding instrument Georges Delerue used to use a lot, like in " Just as you are, I love you" from THE HORSEMEN). At any rate, it was just a beautiful, floating piece of music, like a soft dream.

Forget soundtrack holy grails, this film is at the top of my DVD grail list (as the only unreleased work of Milos Forman).

Holy Grail? It's readily available on DVD via Olive films. Amazon is asking just $12.46.

Cheers, it wasn't the last time I looked, obviously a couple of years ago now (I must have the biggest Forman DVD collection on the planet so that's a definite addition).

Olympic Village

This track could TOTALLY be on one of the Sound Gallery compilations! 70s Euro-cheese at its best. Can't believe I've passed up this LP so often. I will pick this up for a dollar next time I see it! Thanks for the heads up!

To be honest it is good music but it is basically par for the course HENRY. Nice pretty themes but from what I gather not really what you are searching for.

" I do think he wrote some lovely themes here and there, such as THE MOLLY MAGUIRES, I have never found him to be what I might term a creator of comprehensive scores, with interlocking developed themes "

You've just perfectly summed up how I feel about Henry Mancini.
There's something about his scores that seem to miss the glue that I love from the likes of John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith, even though he wrote some really great music.

Thanks for the info, everyone.

Though I enjoyed the "Losers" theme, the others sound pretty Mancini-generic, like outtakes from any number of other Mancini scores, most of which, barring a few central themes, have always seemed pretty interchangeable to me.

Though I may still end up getting the score....

If you're basing that off of his "soundtrack" albums, that's one thing, but there is certainly thematic consistency in his actual film scores, "Days of Wine and Roses" being a prime example. I think that Mancini can get to the heart of a scene in a way that few films composers can.

TO KEVIN MCGANN- Interesting, I always felt the same way for the most part not always though, a great melodic tune maker, a average film composer. But TO EACH ONE'S OWN, there will be those who will not agree with us.

I was surprised by how much electronic music there was in the film. Did any get onto the LP?

I remember getting the LP for 69 cents or perhaps it was 3/ $1.00. Great Sealed Cut Out LP Soundtrack which showed up in the good old Cut Out Bins at WOOLWORTH. I still have it. Wasn't a big Mancini fan but I kind of enjoyed it. My favorite tracks: "Salute to the Olympians" at 16:30 and the Finale Version of it at 31:50
It seems Sir Dave, that the "Spaced Out" track at 5:20 may be the only exclusively electronic track on the album. Some other tracks may have elements.

Another good score for an Olympic Documentary you may find enjoyable is 16 DAYS OF GLORY by Lee Holdridge:

"Cut-outs!" "3 for a dollar!" I haven't heard those words in an age. The Zoobley-Zoob must be back!

Thanks for cluing me in.
