Intrada once did a splendid set of the 80s TWILIGHT ZONE show, with music by the likes of Basil Poledouris, Craig Safan, Christopher Young, Fred Steiner, and it was such a massive bomb, it killed any future releases with more music like that. Which is -- in my personal view -- a pity, because it was a great set. But what are you going to do if there is just no market for it? As an '80s kid and big admirer of the composers included therein I should've been the ideal audience for such a set, so even though I'd never seen the show I bought the set blind (or deaf, as it were) and found it to be a total snoozefest! Go figure. That's interesting. I also like the AMAZING STORIES sets, but the TWILIGHT ZONE set would be my top pick of these four anthology TV series albums.

You have to wonder how many ‘first time buyers’ for a four CD set there are. With the two CD promo, the two CD official release and the 3CD set I’m all YSH-out. It's like razor blades.... it used to be just one blade, then came the double blade, then tripple, then quadruple blades.... Personally, I'm holding out for the 5CD set now.

That's interesting. I also like the AMAZING STORIES sets, but the TWILIGHT ZONE set would be my top pick of these four anthology TV series albums. Interesting, indeed, as the Amazing Stories sets are in my opinion the pinnacle of '80 TV scoring, overflowing with creativity and emotion. Then again, I loved that show and looked forward to a new episode each week but don't recall ever seeing an episode of the TZ reboot, so no doubt nostalgia is weighing heavily on my opinion (in addition to my natural predilection toward the styles of music employed throughout AS). Perhaps. I remember either show from back then and watched episodes of both shows in the original run, but by no means all of them, and haven't seen either show or even episodes since. No doubt AMAZING STORIES had the more prestigious "pedigree" cast and crew signed up, as it had a higher budget, and many top-tier movie stars and directors (Spielberg, Dante, Eastwood, Zemeckis, composers such as Williams, Goldsmith, Delerue, etc.), however, it was ultimately the more disappointing of the two series. The stories were more or less tame and lame, few that I remember. The 85 TWILIGHT ZONE revival, on the other hand, while by no means perfect, had some episodes that just stuck and were great. The lesser budget forced a more focused approach and the chamber like scores were just great. Episodes like Wes Craven's "Shatterday" (early role for Bruce Willis), "Button, Button" (later remade as a the feature film "THE BOX") just stuck a chord. And I don't think any AMAZING STORIES episode ever reached the intensity of an episode like Twilight Zone's Nightcrawlers (directed by William Friedkin, so TZ had at least some A-listers as well). So yeah, came to both shows more or less at the same time, but I found back then (as a teen) that AMAZING STORIES where the higher gloss publication, but the 85 Twilight Zone was more daring in its tone. And so TWILIGHT ZONE 85 wins over AMAZING STORIES for me (both as a series as well as far as music is concerned, though I really like the albums of AMAZING STORIES a lot too).

You have to wonder how many ‘first time buyers’ for a four CD set there are. With the two CD promo, the two CD official release and the 3CD set I’m all YSH-out. If it wasn’t for the people behind the new set, this would have all the hallmarks of a grift. If we’ve reached peak market or even passed it, the diminishing returns on the multiple re-releases will soon set in. Since it's OOP, it's a good idea to press more so folks who missed out can I have a copy. Intrada have the data to know there is still interest in the title. I hope there is interest in this title, and as I have already said, I think this title should always be re-issued and available, it's a great score. (Ideally, all scores should always be available, of course.) I'm wondering myself sometimes how many of these re-issues are actually bought by "first time buyers", and how many people feel the urge to "update" already owned editions every time a newer release comes along.
