The self-important Bobby V.'s gotten the heave-ho from Fred Wilpon, and it's about time.

Now he can go and grovel to his ol' buddy G.W. Bush -- the only man in American more incompetent than he is -- for a job.

Maybe ambassador to the Dominican Republic...

And for the Yankees, it was a vintage Yankee postseason game. With Bernie once again adding to his legacy of postseason greatness. smile

Just goes to prove that last year's Game 7 didn't scar us for life.

Well,
All the posts I made on my threads and a few others (between friends) may not have been true about Bobby Valentine.. What I do feel, is that it was time for a change.. I believe Valentine was burned out with the FRANCHISE..Not as a manager..I DO believe he gave up on this team, shortly before, if not shortly after the all star break of this year..And, that was sad..Because he was always a competitor, and would come out of the dugout on calls, and get in an umpires face..This season,he'd argue all right, but he'd look beaten before he even started out to argue..And you knew, he would not argue for long, this was not the "old" "Bobby V", he was shot..He was already burned out, blown out, whatever 7 years in a Mets uniform can do to you, he was it..He never wanted to admit it..It was PRIDE..He wanted to make something of this mishmash of players his arch enemy general manager Steve Phillips put together..He never wanted Jeromy Burnitz, and he disagreed with some of the trades that distanced him from players he groomed, and trusted..Valentine was caught in a tough situation. He disliked Phillips,(for a whole host of reasons, more than I can state here) and we all have found ourselves working with, or for an ASSHOLE, (at one time or another) who want's nothing more than to screw you, at the expense of you, no matter what, to look good to the system, and to the employers..And although Valentine was no saint, this is what irked him about Steve Phillips..A General Manager who would be "raa-raa" in the clubhouse after a Mets win, but would be ABSENT, when things were not so joyful ..Bobby had his faults..He gave up..This team of "superstars" GAVE UP...They gave up early, and often..He sat there as if stung by a bee...Like, he could not change the habits, or the behaviors of these millionaire spoiled brats..He was STUNG..BURNED OUT..You EXPECTED him to erupt, but, he did not...It's almost like he KNEW the writing was on the wall with this "assortment", of players, but he himself did not want to believe it..

I feel sorry for Bobby Valentine..I understand, in a weird way, the moustache, and disguise in the dugout after being thrown out of a game..He cared at one time..He really did..And, make no mistake, this 2002 Mets team played like they were embalmed this season, no emotion, no fierce competative fire...And, Bobby's emotional state I believe, had plenty to do with it..Read what he says now that it's over..(His anger may hurt him) I believe Valentine felt the sting behind his back that Phillips was applying.. And I have been critical of Bobby..Yes I have,(YES I HAVE!!) but the more you learn, the clearer the picture... I think Phillips is, and was a main culprit in the bad relations between the two..Phillips is the type of guy (well, it seems to me) that always kisses up to the "big man", and kisses your butt at the same time, walking the tightrope, and whoever furthers his career, the better..So, be careful of the knife in your back..Valentine is no saint..But, I can see,( having worked in such environs) how he truly hated Phillips, a prepossessing dolt , a man who truly was looking totally out for his own ass..Well, now, Fred Wilpon has grown some testacles, it seems, in the last week, and has done his "Steinbrenneresqe " best, to see to it that it be known that "He's the boss"... And, maybe that's for the best..The Met's need to grow some serious hair on their balls...

Now, Bobby has held his own press conference...(He wanted to be a part of his own firing press conference!! Can you imagine!)

He was in a nice pressed white shirt, and tie,in the confines of his restaurant in Queens, "Bobby V's" and it looked like from the way Valentine answered the fairly easy questions with his wife looking on, it was all over..Well, it was not..The Mets, saga was not yet "over"..He did another newspaper interview and blasted Phillips on his well chronicled "affair" with a Met's employee, and then shot another blast across the bow about how "Phillip's did nothing for the Sept. 11th victims, and I did this, blah, blah, " "He never showed up on time to his own church for special services, blah, blah"...

Bobby should have known when to quit...He should have left it alone at the press conference in his restaurant....But, he felt that NEED to tell everyone what an asshole Phillips was..I think, Phillips IS an asshole..Bobby didn't have to tell me that..Or many other Mets fans that.. But, Bobby V is no saint either..But, I believe he is shooting himself in the foot in trying to land another managing position... I know he is bitter at Phillips, but not the Mets..Phillips is that phony piece of shit on the job that is ALWAYS undermining you...And you go to sleep at night knowing it..And, wanting to personally kick their ass for it...But, Bobby V is going to recieve 2.7 million to sit on his ass in his restaurant, or in his posh Conn. home (if another team does not hire him) and ponder his "future" next year...Can any of us have that luxury?? He ought to shut up, and count his blessings at this point..He won't be clipping coupons any time soon...

The only thing that bothers me about the Yankees early exit is that this is the first time where Torre can be accused of mismanaging the team during a postseason unlike the 97 ALDS and 01 WS where he went with the best shot and it didn't work. The pitching staff the Yankees have now is a joke and I think we got a sign of how Giambi and co. have yet to fill the leadership roles of O'Neill and Tino.

That said they can always build on this next year as Rivera did after the 97 ALDS, or else the downturn may have begun. But I would note that this defeat only validates once and for all what a crock of BS all this talk about the Yankees and their "unfair advantages" of the last few years was and is and anyone who tries to run down their achievements by saying it was all because of money is full of it in the extreme. The 98-00 Yankees did something that no other team in this generation is ever going to be able to accomplish again IMO and that speaks volumes to their talent and their greatness, and not their salary structure or their location.

I salute Anaheim for doing what they had to do and so long as the champion is neither Arizona or Atlanta, I will applaud the outcome. In a few weeks time I will be easing the pain with some happy tapes of World Series and postseasons past. smile (Thank God for the VCR!)

Now, I admit I never got to see many Yankee games this year because of the YES cable debacle in my area, but, I NEVER saw Joe Torre go to the mound in the last couple of years as much as he did in that last game..Or do a "Bobby top step" imitation like he did..He will not be able to sit there next year on the bench looking good in his Ray Bans.. He was clearly without a clue as to what to do..He threw his top guns out there, and got beat, badly..He looked shocked..He's going to have to be much MORE pro-active next year, he AND Cashman, (even Cashman looked in the stands like a man who just got the chair) These guys are no longer on auto pilot as far as this team is concerned..Torre will now not just be able to sit back and watch his troops dominate, as he has in the past, he is now going to have to reapproach, and rethink the way he manages now...It's 2 years in a row now,and this year they didn't even make the championship series.. And they both know George is now going to become a pain..You could see it, noticably, by the pain on both their faces..We will see how Joe Torre manages at the start of next season, and how well the team starts off.. Steinbrenner meddling will certainly be in the mix come next year..It's going to happen..Torre, if not successful with this team early, may hang up his cleats..He won't get fired, I can't see that. But, I can see him stepping aside if the team, and the fun goes south..George is watching now...It's not auto pilot any longer..If the Mets had any hope of interviewing Mazzilli, they may get a roadblock now..

And, the DUMB, assinine colored sponges I see some of these teams "fans" slapping together in the stands during these last series of games HAS TO GO!! It just reaks of phony NO NOTHING fair weather fans and is absolutely retarded!!!
Not to mention the sensory depravation that goes on in ballparks where HORRID "music" is BLASTED over the sound systems non stop between innings, and pitches.. It's an all out assault!..It's Like, the clubs are saying, "Lets keep them interested, and awake, none of the morons really know why they are here anyhow"..Can you IMAGINE a Dad trying to talk to his son or daughter, or a Mom, and trying to explain the game to a youngster with all of this garbage being blasted at them?? You can't hear yourself think, let alone talk and be heard without raising your voice to the person right next to you!! (not that the folks who clap those friggin' sponges are the REAL fans anyhow!!) Part of the total disrespect of the fans..Or at least the few real fans sitting in the nosebleeds who can actually afford the playoff tickets..ENOUGH!! Where's Jane Jarvis and the organ??!! Bless her heart..Better times, better baseball..

Arizona's inability to win a game with its 1-2 punch also is a testament to why what Selig was saying was crap. No matter how much you build up a team you are always vulnerable in any postseason and you have to *earn* your success, and the size of your payroll has nothing to do with it.

But then again, if this had been any team other than the Yankees scoring such succcess we wouldn't have heard this crap act from Selig and his merry band of incompetent owners in Kansas City, Texas, Montreal, Baltimore etc. The thing that is so reprehensible about the worst Yankee haters is their refusal to give credit where credit is due and their double standards that say nothing about the "lack of competition" when its the Chicago Bulls and LA Lakers rendering the NBA regular season meaningless, while they denounce every move the Yankees make to try and field a winning ball club.

I said in this forum a few months back that the reason why Selig and his group were full of it was because unlike the NBA, where only two teams have a shot of winning the championship, in baseball we had upwards of ten teams with legit shots at winning the championship and now there is no emerging favorite at all save perhaps Atlanta at this point. And that was even true when the Yankees were piling up their championships as well.

Amazing that, just a few weeks ago, we were talking about the possible strike, the rich teams, and how no other teams could compete with them for the pricey players, talent, and bringing in fans..Now the rich teams, the powerhouses go home for the winter, (and Atlanta may be next tonight) and the Angels, and Twins and Cards move on..Amazing..It's been a wild and crazy baseball year..We will see how it all ends right here! It's been a pleasure talking baseball with you guys!

Well, with Atlanta knocked out then the best possible alternative to another Yankees championship is now staring me in the face, with four teams that I could feel happy for if any of them were to win it all. I'm willing to take a year's respite from the WS just as we had to do in 54, 59 and 97. smile

I agree, I'm happy for all these teams..The networks might not be, but how can you not pump your fist for the Twins and Gardenhire! Good job!! A real shot in the arm for baseball..

It's obvious that Jason Giambi brought the Oakland jinx to NY, while Ron Gardenhire imported some mid-1980's Met magic to Minnesota.
