For those, like myself, who have been searching for years to find the soundtrack to THE SHINING on CD, the best I can suggest for you to do is purchase a copy of the soundtrack to THE EXORCIST, which finally was released on PERSEVERANCE RECORDS in 2012. Many of the same excerpts from both films are found on this soundtrack from composer KRZYSZTOF PENDERECKI. It's the best of both worlds listening to these selections. It's as if you're listening to both scores at the same time. You also get MIKE OLDFIELD'S haunting TUBULAR BELLS. It's the next best thing to owning a CD of THE SHINING.

Wasn't this released on CD relatively recently...at least the Carlos stuff?

Wendy Carlos released her 2 volume 'lost scores' CDs a while back. This had the few tracks that were used in the film as well as all her stuff that was composed but unused. I was a wee bit disappointed when I heard it, particularly as the incredible main title track was a bit different from the mix on the old soundtrack LP. I think the score with the mix of source and composed was really the best choice in this case. It would have had a much different feel with Wendy's whole score. ( probably interesting though)
As to THE EXORCIST point......nah!.....not in my book. The stuff on THE EXORCIST soundtrack might be some of the same composer's stuff but isn't the same for me

Hello,

SHINING Cues :

Krzysztof Penderecki : Utrenja (Excerpt)

Krzysztof Penderecki : The Awakening Of Jacob

Krzysztof Penderecki : De Natura Sonoris No. 2

THE EXORCIST cues :

Krzysztof Penderecki : String Quartet (1960)

Krzysztof Penderecki : Polymorphia

Krzysztof Penderecki : Kanon For Orchestra And Tape

Definitively not same works used for the two films ...

Polymorphia is also used in The Shining.

I think I read a claim at some point that they were the same recording. However, the recording is does not sound the same to these ears.

a bit of elaboration-

The music by Penderecki in the Shining is a bit more extensive--

De Natura Sonoris #1 & 2
Utrenja
Awakening (Dream) of Jacob
Kanon for Orchestra & Tape
Polymorphia.

The actual recordings are different for Shining & Exorcist. Most of the Exorcist recordings were conducted by Leonard Slatkin. I believe the Henryck Cycz conducted the recordings of Polymorphia, and De Natura 1 & 2 for The Shining.

Just bringing this up again for discussion given the recent renaissance of Stephen King and his works these past 2 years.

I found a YouTube posting that had the OST. I have to say that for my book, while most of it is a needle drop type of score, it is by far the creepiest, scariest film soundtrack ever. The opening titles by Wendy Carlos are up there with Goldsmith's original "The Omen" as the the most unnerving and unsettling opening titles ever. The rest of it I cannot listen to at night.

I assume there must be some sort of licensing issue regarding the cues hence why it has never seen a proper CD or any other sort of re-release since its original debut.

Does anyone have any other interesting details and is there a possibility of us ever seeing a proper CD of this score? This is probably my final Holy Grail as it where and would love to have it.

i've had this on my discogs want list since day one, and it sure seems like it doesn't go for less than fifty unless it's damaged in some way.
would kill for a specialty label cd job.

Rediscovering I II doesn't sound exactly the same as the movie, still its as close as you'll get, I'm happy with it.. Japan Reflex cd has the rest of the music but finding it is winning the lottery.

Really love this movie & score of the 80s. I'm surprised no label has touched it - probably due too crappy wrangling rights such a pity.

One of my favorite movies. I am an enthusiast of Penderecki, one of the great living composers imo.

I've been a fan of the music from the movie for 30 years, and have a factory sealed copy of the LP and even the cassette soundtrack (remember those?)

Here's what I have gathered over the years-

1- LP soundtrack was withdrawn before the US theatrical release due to copyright/publishibng rights violations. Not sure what recordings and what specific violations however.

2- The original LP only had a fraction of the score and Penderecki's. Here is the original track listing

- The Shining (Main Title) (03:27) Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind
-. Rocky Mountains (03:01) Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind
- Lontano (10:11) Gyorgy Ligeti/Sinfonie-Orchestra des Sudwestfunks/Conducted by Ernest Bour
- Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta (08:07) Bela Bartok/Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra/Conducted by Herbert von Karajan
- Utrenja (Excerpt) (03:33) Krzysztof Penderecki/Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic, Warsaw/Conducted by Andrzej Markowski
- The Awakening of Jacob (07:55) Krzysztof Penderecki/Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra/Conducted by Krzysztof Penderecki
- De Natura Sonoris, No. 2 (08:56) Krzysztof Penderecki/Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra/Conducted by Krzysztof Penderecki
- Home (03:09) Henry Hall and the Gleneagles Hotel Band

Also note the recording of De Natura Sonoris No.2 is NOT the recording used in the film.

3- There were snippets of a lot more music (three works by Penderecki, three other band songs, a couple by Carlos & Elkind; etc) in the movie.

4- Music Editor Gordon Stainforth mixed/overdubbed & edited a lot of the music together in the final film cut.

So my concluding thoughts are it is EXTREMELY UNLIKELY a soundtrack release will ever happen. The film is nearly 40 years old and is comprised of MANY sources that would mean a hoard of legalities, moreso if you try to get the actual recordings from the film. Additionally, any music label will likely release the entire work of each music piece that was excerpted in the film, making the soundtrack album pretty long (80+ minutes).

Your best bet therefore is to make your own soundtrack by pooling all the sources yourself and compiling them, or even using audio edit software to mix/make your own version separate from the film. A true labor of love if you choose to go this route.

Here is the full list of the works, the recordings used in the film and where they can be acquired (if not youtube.com)

- Main Title & Rocky Mountains (Carlos [rediscovering lost scores Vol. 1 & 2])
- Lontano - (Gyorgy Ligeti [on Shining soundtrack LP])

- Dream of Jacob - (Krzysztof Penderecki [on Shining soundtrack LP])
- De Natura Sonoris #1 (Krzysztof Penderecki [Dies Irae (Auschwitz Oratorium) / Polymorphia / De Natura Sonoris LP conducted by Henryck Cycz])

- Kanon for Orchestra & Tape -(Krzysztof Penderecki [original recording unknown])

- Utrenja pt 2 -(Krzysztof Penderecki [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMLxF93u5Yw&t=1373s
('Ewangelia' is at beginning of Pt 2, 'Kanon Paschy' is at 21:42])
- Heartbeats - (Carlos [rediscovering lost scores Vol. 1 & 2])
