Today in the mail I received a videotape from a girl I found on the Internet who generously made me a copy of the STAR WARS auditions. I don't know how many different versions there are (I've seen clips from a Hamill/Ford/Fisher audition that wasn't on this tape), but this one runs about an hour and 40 minutes. I just thought I'd mention some of the people I saw, a couple of which were surprises, especially this one . . . Imagine my excitement to see that my favorite actor, Kurt Russell, auditioned for the part of Han Solo!! And not just because I'm a huge fan, I thought he was pretty good. He was with William Katt (THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO), who was auditioning as Luke, and IMHO I think they would have both been the best second choice had Hamill and Ford not been chosen. Russell and Katt also switched parts, but I felt Russell worked better as Han and Katt as Luke. Also seen auditioning are Robbie Benson and Andrew Stevens as Luke, Lisa Eilbacher (BEVERLY HILLS COP) and Cindy Williams as Leia, Frederic Forrest and Perry King as Han (which is funny, because King played Han in the STAR WARS radio dramatizations; perhaps Lucas remembered him from the audition?) And there were a handful of other people whom I didn't recognize, some of which gave some pretty funny performances. One guy playing Han kicks back in the chair and puffs on a cigar as he auditions with a potential Leia, and a Luke hopefull nibbles nervously at his fingernails while auditioning with Russell. (And dig those 70s'-style hair and clothes. ) And of course, we get to see Hamill and Ford together (which is the first audition on the tape), and--later--Ford with Fisher. Ford reads with about four different Leias and a couple different Lukes. George Lucas is heard occasionally throughout, offering some minor positioning suggestions and calling "Action" and "Cut," and is only seen very briefly at the ending thanking Frederic Forrest for coming in. Anyway, I just thought I'd share this with you, since I know there's plenty of STAR WARS fans here. It was fun to watch, but did grow a bit tiresome given that it was the same Han/Luke and Han/Leia "auditioning dialogue" all the time, with only minor variations.
