Today in the mail I received a videotape from a girl I found on the Internet who generously made me a copy of the STAR WARS auditions. I don't know how many different versions there are (I've seen clips from a Hamill/Ford/Fisher audition that wasn't on this tape), but this one runs about an hour and 40 minutes. I just thought I'd mention some of the people I saw, a couple of which were surprises, especially this one . . .

Imagine my excitement to see that my favorite actor, Kurt Russell, auditioned for the part of Han Solo!! And not just because I'm a huge fan, I thought he was pretty good. He was with William Katt (THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO), who was auditioning as Luke, and IMHO I think they would have both been the best second choice had Hamill and Ford not been chosen. Russell and Katt also switched parts, but I felt Russell worked better as Han and Katt as Luke.

Also seen auditioning are Robbie Benson and Andrew Stevens as Luke, Lisa Eilbacher (BEVERLY HILLS COP) and Cindy Williams as Leia, Frederic Forrest and Perry King as Han (which is funny, because King played Han in the STAR WARS radio dramatizations; perhaps Lucas remembered him from the audition?) And there were a handful of other people whom I didn't recognize, some of which gave some pretty funny performances. One guy playing Han kicks back in the chair and puffs on a cigar as he auditions with a potential Leia, and a Luke hopefull nibbles nervously at his fingernails while auditioning with Russell. (And dig those 70s'-style hair and clothes. big grin ) And of course, we get to see Hamill and Ford together (which is the first audition on the tape), and--later--Ford with Fisher. Ford reads with about four different Leias and a couple different Lukes. George Lucas is heard occasionally throughout, offering some minor positioning suggestions and calling "Action" and "Cut," and is only seen very briefly at the ending thanking Frederic Forrest for coming in.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share this with you, since I know there's plenty of STAR WARS fans here. It was fun to watch, but did grow a bit tiresome given that it was the same Han/Luke and Han/Leia "auditioning dialogue" all the time, with only minor variations.

Oh, and we also see Sissy Spacek auditioning for Leia. At least, I think it's her. The quality during that particular audition is kind of messed up, but it looks like her. (She actually got the part and Carrie Fisher was going to star in CARRIE, but they decided to swap roles.)

Thanks, Spacehunter......That is interesting!!! I am "old" wanna-be actor......Played the "Auditioning Game" for many years (Screen Actor's Guild and Equity member)......I think a lot of people would be interested in seeing old audition tapes......Sort of lets one see a little of the "nuts and bolts" of the industry......

I'm hoping Lucas's planned "Archival Edition" DVD set of all the STAR WARS films includes these auditions (plus the final Hamill/Ford/Fisher one that I've seen elsewhere) in better quality.

And if it doesn't, Spacehunter, I trust you'll help us all get copies in the best condition available? big grin

The quality of my copy is about a 4.5 on a scale of 1-10. I mean, after all, it's video from 1975, so the image isn't in the best condition, but it's clear enough to see most of the people, and the audio is better than I expected.

one of my favorite bits from Saturday Night Live, back when I used to watch it, involved a Star Wars audition skit done with Kevin Spacey, who's famous for his impersonations.
This was around the time of the theatrical release of the Special Editions.

his best ones were his impersonations of Richard Dreyfuss trying out for C-3PO, Christopher Walken trying out for Han Solo, and I think Walter Matthau going for Chewbacca.

Oh, I loved that skit. It was so hysterical, especially Richard Dreyfus as C-3PO. I've always wondered if the SNL writers knew that Christopher Walken was really in the running for Han Solo, or if it was just a coincidence.
