If you are like me (and, I think, Montana Dave), you are watching a lot of documentaries on dvd these days.

Please post the documentaries on dvd that you recommend.

I just saw this one, and am going to watch it again. It was really that interesting, and really made me think.

Best quote:

"It’s like you could almost see the truncated syllogism in their head.

'Like, I bought the car, how could there not be a place to park it?

Surely it comes with a parking space.'”

'Out of the Clear Blue Sky'. The CEO of the Trading Firm of Cantor Fitzgerald survived because he was delayed getting to work that day because of his Son's first day of school. That day in question was September 11, 2001 and the (seemingly) entire Trading Firm of 700 employees were all killed in the World Trade Center. He vows to 'help the 700 families' of his employees by any means necessary. Watch. Listen. The film had me crying a few times. The absolute final frames of the Documentary and the absolute final words to those images (before the credits roll), will haunt you in their beauty and grace.

From a couple of years ago is the Documentary about the very first, (and I mean the very first), signs of AIDS in the gay community in San Francisco and how the city and the community came to grips with this 'unknown disease'. Heartbreaking to view, but view you should. And not just because yours truly is in it.'WE WERE HERE'.

I just saw this one recently:

Amazing how many points of view there were, and how it is not an easy issue to address.

A few of my favorites (synopses courtesy of IMDB):

  • WORD IS OUT (1977) - interviews with 26 gay men and women

  • SHERMAN'S MARCH (1985) - Ross McElwee sets out to make a documentary about the lingering effects of General Sherman's march of destruction through the South during the Civil War, but is continually sidetracked

  • GREY GARDENS (1975) - An old mother and her middle-aged daughter, the aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, live their eccentric lives in a filthy, decaying mansion in East Hampton

  • F FOR FAKE (1973) - Orson Welles' free-form documentary about fakery focusing on the art forger Elmyr de Hory and de Hory's biographer, Clifford Irving, who also wrote a notorious fraudulent Howard Hughes autobiography. Welles also touches on the reclusive Hughes and Welles' own career (which started with a faked resume and includes a phony Martian invasion)

  • FILMING "OTHELLO" (1978) - Orson Welles directs and stars in this film about the making of his award-winning 1952 production of "Othello" (sad to say this one's not available in any format)

  • MY BEST FIEND (1999) - Werner Herzog traces the often violent ups and downs of his relationship with actor Klaus Kinski, revisiting the various locations of their films and talking to the people they worked with

  • THE THIN BLUE LINE (1988) - Errol Morris' film successfully argues that a man was wrongly convicted for murder by a corrupt Texas justice system

  • THE FOG OF WAR (2003) - Errol Morris' film in which Robert McNamara discusses his tenure as Defense Secretary in the Kennedy & Johnson administrations and the various difficult lessons he learned about the nature and conduct of modern war

  • THE UNKNOWN KNOWN (2013) - Errol Morris' film in which former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld discusses his career in Washington D.C. and his involvement in the invasion of Iraq

  • AILEEN WUORNOS: THE SELLING OF A SERIAL KILLER (1992) - Nick Broomfield's film of murder, possible police corruption, and conniving opportunism that tracks the trial and conviction of "America's First Female Serial Killer"

  • AILEEN: LIFE & DEATH OF A SERIAL KILLER (2003) - Broomfield's follow-up film on the Aileen Wuornos case

  • ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM (2005) - the story of Enron, which went from the seventh largest US company to bankruptcy in less than a year, and the people who caused its collapse (as well as those who aided and abetted them)

  • TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE (2007) - an in-depth look at the torture practices of the United States in Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, focusing on an innocent taxi driver in Afghanistan who was tortured and killed in 2002

  • THE SORROW & THE PITY (1969) - the story of the French Occupation from 1940 to 1944, mixing archival footage with 1969 interviews with a German officer, French collaborators, and resistance fighters

  • THE ACT OF KILLING (2012) - a film in which former Indonesian death-squad leaders are invited to reenact their mass-killings in whichever cinematic genres they wish, including classic Hollywood crime scenarios and lavish musical numbers

    24 HOURS ON CRAIGSLIST.

Poorly shot. And dull: I started fast-forwarding after 10 minutes.

    BEHIND THE BURLY Q.

Poorly shot and FASCINATING. Women who worked in burlesque in the early 20th Century share their memories.

    (This should work for the non-gay, since there's LOTSA 40's and 50's style t & a)

Paris, the Luminous Years: Towards the Making of the Modern

A fine introduction to the modern art of the early 20th century.
