A friend who works at in media wanted to know if I wanted to hear the advance of this.

Without looking like a total freak, I took two deep breaths and used my calm voice and said, "Sure, why not?"

What can I say? It's not revolutionary Williams, but it sure is the jazziest I've heard him. Some parts sound like "Sabrina" and others sound like "Attack of the Clone." Impossible, but there it is. The score it most resembles in tone is Bill Conti's music to The Tomas Crown Affair.

The bad news is that the 62:26 long CD is riddled with source music. But, if you know what these songs sound, then you know the sound Williams is going for in the title cue. There's songs from Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Stan Getz, Dusty Springfield.

His best score this year is still "Attack of the Clones" with Oscar buzz going to "Minority Report," but this one is pretty nice stuff.

I had to give the CD back. Sigh.

Some have described it as jazzy with influences of Lenny Bernstein.

Though I don't think either are actually worthy of Oscar recognition, I'd sooner see AOTC get the nod.

As for Catch Me If You Can...all I can say is...try and catch me seeing this one if you can.

Thank you for making a reference to Sabrina. I assumed that nobody else had really cared about it.

As for this year, I prefer Minority Report over AOTC, simply because i think it is a nice departure and the end title theme is so...transporting, if that's the right word. It embodies contentment. If ever I am on a Martha Stewart quality New England beach or something, I'll listen to it - just the end though.

I, for one, am looking to foward to this score as a nice antidote to all the heavy (but enjoyable) theatrics and orchestral acrobatics of HARRY POTTER, AOTC and MINORITY REPORT. I think Williams has been stuck in this mold for the past 2 years straight and I would love another small-scale, SABRINA/ACCIDENTAL TOURIST type score from him, as a breather. He excels at these films, bringing so much character and magic to more personal stories. And a jazzy Johnny should a cool Johnny!

I got this because I'd liked the music in that recent Best Movie Title Sequence thread. A very nice listen indeed.

How much of the Maestros score is missing from the CD? I'd love a score only presentation!

Williams recorded just over 50 minutes of score, of which 44 are on the CD.

This is the only post-"Jaws" Williams score that I own, and the only Spielberg score I own other than "Duel." I guess the law of averages had to kick in at some point.

I absolutely love this score, and early on acquired one of the FYC cd's that mercifully lacks the source cues. Top notch.

I'd hardly say the CD is "riddled" with source music. It has 4 songs, all of which are pretty good and 45 odd mins of score. If you don't want to hear the songs, just cut the things out. Good score though, only bought it recently for a few pence.

Thank God you didn't have to suffer through the songs by such hacks as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Burt Bacharach, Nat "King" Cole, and Frank Sinatra.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with those songs, and in fact, I love them all, but I like having the option of playing the score without interruption. I also have the commercial release and enjoy giving it a spin from time to time.

Fair enough.

The Catch Me If you Can CD uses the superior mono recording. The stereo recording, which was done with a separate mic configuration, is off balance and distorted.

I just listened to the main title to this a few nights ago for the first time in a while.... not as good as I remember it being. Never bought the CD.... never will!

I realize that "Catch Me If You Can" is not as good as "Checkmate" or "Lost in Space," but can you name ONE John Williams score from 1977 or later that is better?
