What better way to celebrate this month’s 25th anniversary of Joe Dante’s Gremlins 2: The New Batch than with a Deluxe Edition of Jerry Goldsmith’s brilliant and manic score for this classic sequel. Gremlins 2 is one of Goldsmith’s most loved scores of the 90s and it’s so exciting to bring the score back for a new generation. Requests for this album have been coming in for years.

For Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Joe Dante was able to pull off that rarest achievement in movies — coming up with a sequel that not only lives up to the original but, arguably, even surpasses it.

Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan) and Kate Beringer (Phoebe Cates) move to New York City and meet up with their Mogwai friend, Gizmo, when a series of accidents creates a new generation of diverse gremlins. Billy, Kate, and Gizmo must once again use all their experience to prevent the gremlins from taking over New York!

A significant expansion from the original 1990 release, Jerry Goldsmith’s Gremlins 2: The New Batch has returned!

So is Gremlins 2 a "deluxe edition" as the spine says, a "25th anniversary edition" as the front cover says or just a "limited collector's edition" as it says on the back? razz

Yes Jason...I do think it is a good idea to have separate threads for each of these spectacular releases. You should create one for the Outbreak release as well. When people search for these titles in the future, given FSM's poor search engine, separate threads will make it easier plus isn't that kind of how we normally do things 'round these parts?

Gremlins 2 -- utterly fantastic release!!!

Hearing the first sample I don't remember there being a cartoon short before the start of the film. My only quabble is wish they had not meshed it with the cool main title cue.

I think it all depends on who posts the initial thread.

Intrada have separate ones. LLL put theirs in the same thread. I think Varese used to have separate ones, maybe a different person started those back then.

Looks like the Gremlins are more popular around here...

That main title, soaring over New York - "Just you wait" I think it was called on the old CD? - Is one of my oldest film music memories, and my first association with the name Jerry Goldsmith. Don't really care for much of the rest of the score to be honest, but that flighty, soaring main title never left me. Great little tune!

Too bad you have to wade through 3 minutes of cartoon music to hear it!
smile
Seriously though we can dig out the old soundtrack and just rip it from that. So all good!

Well, I ordered this score (cool stuff), and decided to finally break down and get the first Gremlins score from ScreenArchives (I know, I procrastinated far too long).

Yes, another puzzling decision. And wasn't the cartoon stuff not even by Goldsmith?

"Gremlins 2" has always opened with Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny goofing around the Warner logo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFL9LLZkolY

The End Credits also includes Daffy and Bugs goofing around, as well as Porky Pig. It's really great that the cartoon scoring (composed by Fred Steiner) made it to the CD but yes, perhaps it would've been better had it all been included at the end of the CD. Personally, I don't mind at all because in the film the cartoon music does precede everything else, but I can understand those who aren't keen on it.

Both "Gremlins" scores are marvelous, unique, and tremendous fun. The original Varese of "Gremlins 2" was the first CD I bought, sometime in 1992 or 1993, and only because I wanted a recording of the Gremlins theme and couldn't find the Geffen LP or cassette tape of the first film. As neat as the original album was, the complete score is WAY better than the original album assembly, and like everyone else I'm anxious to hear what was originally written for the bat gremlin.

Correct. It was composed and conducted by Fred Steiner.

I like the cartoon stuff. It segueing into Goldsmith's opening cue is the way I always hear it in my head so I'm glad it'll be preserved on CD.

How am I going to wait until the 29th? frown
Also, do you suppose "New York New York" will include Brain Gremlin (Tony Randall) singing, or will it just be instrumental?

If it wasn't included, people would ask why it wasn't there. May as well stick it on smile

I just wonder if Varese knows that music wasn't by Goldsmith. Gotta separate those cues.

They do indeed. If you take a look at the back cover art in the first entry of this thread, you'll see in teeny tiny print at the bottom of the back cover the composer credits for those pieces.

This isn't the first time (source) cues by other composers are placed within the score in order to replicate the film version, though they could have easily separated the cues so people could just start the score from track 2 if they don't like the cartoon music.

Definitely looking forward to all the unreleased music in this score, I feel some of the best cues were left off.
