Can you name any films where the title character is NOT played by the star of the film?

The title character MUST appear in the film, BTW, so that disqualifies WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? And all of the PINK PANTHERS.

And don't give me the wimpy "Didn't Robert Towne say that Chinatown was practically a character in the film...." kind of arguments. They gotta be human, too.

I think The Stunt Man qualifies, but could be a quibble. Steve Railsback is the title character, and the focus character, but Peter O'Toole is clearly the star of that show.

Same kind of thing with All About Eve - to me, it's Bette Davis' show all the way, however much we see and hear Anne Baxter.

Here's a simpler example - The Mast of Dimitrios. Dimitrios (Zachary Scott in what I seem to remember is his first appearance) is a presence throughout the film, but the star is clearly Peter Lorre, with second billing to Sydney Greenstreet. [EDIT - in posters shown online, Greenstreet is actually billed first and Lorre fourth, but SG's only in a few key scenes.]

And since we've been talking Bond a lot, there's Dr. No and Goldfinger.

Sean - don't forget OHMSS!

Wait - the title character of OHMSS is the Secret Service as a whole, not her Majesty (is it supposed to be Her Majesty?) - so I guess the star is at least included. wink

Rebecca - but probably disqualified by her not appearing except in a portrait. Or did I make that last bit up?

Does Rebecca herself appear in the film, or just her portrait? [EDIT - too slow on the draw!]

Here's some more:

The Exorcist.

Rosemary's Baby.

The Last of Sheila (she's seen briefly in the beginning isn't she?).

Um, I really should get back to work. smile

Madge also appears in portrait form in OHMSS, so I'm claiming that one as well!

You could argue that Iago is really the star not Othello, but it's not near as clear as JC.

I can't believe I missed Messenger - one of my favorite films, however gimmicky!
