So I finally saw the whole film after 30 years. Yes, I liked it, but maybe it's just a little bit overrated?

Simple Minds' song is of course a classic, as is Keith Forsey's love theme, although it sounds different in the film than on the album.

Forsey's The Reggae is quite good too, and I can even accept Waiting by Elizabeth Daily. I don't really remember hearing them in the film though.

Rest of the tracks on the album are quite forgettable, even Gary Chang's bluesy Dream Montage which sounds nothing like what he did as a film composer later.

There are a few unreleased score cues in the film which would have been fun to have though, including an instrumental version of Don't You and a few ambient sounding things.

Opinions?

It might seem somewhat overrated seeing it for the first time today, but to someone who has aged with it? No. smile

As for music, don't you forget about "We Are Not Alone" by Karla DeVito. The instrumental Simple Minds track would be cool to have. It really ought to be granted an anniversary album with additional songs and score.

If I recall, I liked the film back in the 1980s, but looking at it today (sort of like "Sixteen Candles" before it), it's a very mean-spirited film in a lot of ways. But maybe that's the nihilistic way teens see everything, and John Hughs was just trying to capture that realistically(?).

The Simple Minds song is great, though. I think I still have the soundtrack on vinyl.

Didn't like that one too much.

Haven't seen the film in ages (even though it was recently shown at the Cinemateque here in Oslo, and was also on TV a few nights ago -- which I assume is where FB saw it -- so I've had ample opportunity lately), but it's a rightful classic for its mature treatment of teen issues. Would be interested in a soundtrack that included more of the score, and not just the songs.

4 tracks of score are on the album already. But yes, more score please.

I'd really love to see a John Hughes collection incorporating all the delightful (and unreleased!) instrumental bits from films such as "The Breakfast Club", "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "Some Kind of Wonderful," etc. Yes, the "Breakfast Club" includes some instrumentals (thank goodness), but there is more that could be released!

Hi First Breath,
I've always quite liked the soundtrack to 'TBC'. It has some pretty good songs and the instrumentals aren't bad either. I have a soft spot for the 'Wang Chung' song "Fire In The Twilight". I also really like the instrumental opening to the movie but don't know if that was ever officially released. As another contributor mentioned, it would be great to see a release of music from John Hughes' movies. Ira Newborn scored quite a few so I'm sure that would make an interesting compilation.

The opening is really just an instrumental version of Don't You:

I will be writing an article about this album, for the 40th anniversary of it.

Will be published in Blitzed Magazine.
