Whether we are talking about John Williams, Danny Elfman or Ennio Morricone seeing a video of a concert cannot really capture what those who attended felt. The film WOODSTOCK could only give you a taste of what that was like.

That said, this was shot from one position and has that static quality. This concert was put together under harried conditions and one item not considered is the position of the music stand. The only absolutely deadly placing was Sara Andon for INVESTIGATION OF A CITIZEN ABOVE SUSPICION. And Maegan on BIG GUNDOWN was caught at a bad angle too. My apology to both ladies. Luckily other numbers made up for it.

Thank you Kaya Savas for your work.

So judge for yourself. My review is at the top of the other photo thread.

To skip the boring intro by the host go to the 11:30 mark:

Belated Birthday Greetings,

Part of the fun of this was the process. At one point I thought we had too many ballads and wondered about dropping a couple. I was thinking ORCA might be one to drop. Then Bruce put the kibosh on that by mentioning "all my best comedy material is introducing that one".

I love show business.

I guess I am not the only whacked out Morricone addict in the world.

I should have had THIS playing during the party (then it still would be going on).

EVERY MORRICONE CUE FROM EVERY MOVIE! (kinda)

Actually I was not fishing for responses from that old post as much as bringing attention to this fellow who assembled ostensibly every Morricone cue out there:

I figure that would be daunting for a Goldsmith or a Williams, but Morricone!!!

"To skip the boring intro..."

- nice intro Henry. Bit nervous at the start, more relaxed as you went along. Nice anecdote about Ennio confirming your opinion of the Fistful score. (bit surprised to hear you pronounce Morricone like Eastwood did at the Oscars 2007, though; I guess it's an american thing, so no biggie wink)

I've only had the chance to see the first 40 minutes or so, but have enjoyed every one of them. Nice intro (despite the repeated use of the words "Jerry" and "Goldsmith" wink ) and hats off to the participating musicians for big and committed performances in circumstances that are probably far from their usual venues. Bruce is a polished showman and linked the songs very nicely.

Hard to bear that this kind of thing happens so far out of reach!

Actually this gave me a taste of what the labels go through constantly.

I worked months and months on this. They sometimes go for years on a project.

The reaction is usually, unless you have one a handful of hot titles, a round of indifference with a vocal group telling you what you did wrong and how you should have done it.

Then you learn you did it all for yourself. And for yourself meaning the composer you have an absolute passion for.

And then you really have to thank that small handful of people who don't just say "good music" and pat you on the back but say "that was great, I had no idea he was so melodic!" or "where has this stuff been hidden?" Discovery is everything. For me to be able to convey, if you explored enough, that there is a whole musical world with Morricone just as big and powerful as Williams or Goldsmith or any other favorites. Well, that is indeed what it is all about.

So like those labels I have to deeply thank those who "got it" and relayed that to me. It is what I live for.

Even if it is for as few as maybe a GRATEFUL EIGHT.

Henry, sorry for delay. Am up to 25mins, more to follow.

Wow, how brilliant.
Good opening introduction from you, nice mix of info and personal context. Pitched just right for your audience.

Bruce definitely is a showman, and a relaxed entertainer. Set the scene well.

Se telefonando, wow, your girl did so well!! A tough song. You need good lungs to sing it coz it leaves any singer breathless, but ms ramirez did brilliantly.

Nice job on Gringo like me, at first i wasnt quite sure about the humour/slightly tongue in cheek approach but italian songwords in english can be a bit clonky/ squirmy - however, once into the song Mr Yacko pulled it off. And his finale was very powerful.

The theme from la Due stagione della vita by maegan mcConnell was just beautiful. Excellent italian prose and style.

Overall, so far, superb! And gutted it was in a different continent!!
I know several uk and euro Ennio fans who would've gone after Indio and his gang armed just with a housebrick for a chance of a front row seat.

THANK YOU!

Mr. Yacko's wry approach to "Gringo Like Me" was totally from my suggestion. It represented the group of songs Morricone wrote with Italian lyricists in English. The results can definitely approach the obtuse.

But your appreciation and expression of how worthy the concert is heartening.

My love for composers has always been accompanied and contrasted by the idea they should put more value to the music they have specifically created. Goldmith, Williams, Bernstein, Morricone and from what I understand Herrmann watered down their music and their repertoire for the concert hall. Somehow I don't see Morricone doing half these pieces in concert. So this backyard concert, and these artists wonderful performances, became all the more precious when I realized how rare it all is. I play this tape at least once a week, not just for nostalgia, but because many of these are my favorite renditions of this music.

Great stuff Henry! Thanks for sharing. All the participants were wonderful!

That "Tribute to James Horner" you speak about at the end sounds interesting. Any way of posting it here or a link possibly?

Thanks again!

Henry, congratulations for setting up such a truly entertaining show. You picked up outstanding tunes that deserved to be featured on that evening. Like BillCarson and others said, the singers and musiciens all have achieved a great performance. Also, Bruce Kimmel's presentation is hilarious. I especially liked the moment where he compared your numbered soundtracks with an auction!
Bill, thanks for welcoming me in the thread dedicated to LA CORRISPONDENZA.

Thank you and welcome Laurent!

I enjoyed your contributions over the years to everything Morricone. You are an expert I bow to.

I know many who do not come here because of the combative nature of some of the members but I have found between the abuse button (for those who cross the line) and the ignore button (for those whose comments you find consistently annoying) things have remained relatively civil here.

Thanks for the complements! I desperately needed that. The amount of work I and, particularly, the artists, did over quite a few months was amazing but stressful. They, for me, performed astoundingly well (particularly under the circumstances). And I wish more who said they were coming had come.

Bruce Kimmel who brings that showmanship practically every month to the Federal, a north Hollywood eatery (next one this sunday), added a real cherry to the sundae. That E PER TETTO UN CIELO DI STELLE whistling number was not an easy thing to do. And that mike was not exactly geared for such a piece and this was outside. A couple times he wanted to switch to an easier Morricone piece but he could see how much in love with it I was. In the end the simple beauty of this rare piece came through. I thank him and Tom Griep who made the whole smorgasboard (18 songs!) work.

BTW the whistling is no surprise since Bruce did that on the Varese compilation Morricone album "Once Upon A Time In The Cinema".

Thank you Henry and please, no kidding, don't bow in front of me! Judging by your super large collection as exposed in your house and your backyard as well as your pertinent interventions on this board, your expertise is immense and unquestionable. And so is the case too with Milan NS, Leo Nicols, Mathias, BillCarson and other contributors (sorry for not mentioning all of them). The most important thing remains that we are deeply moved by the music of the Maestro. Whenever I put on the opening track from EN MAI, FAIS CE QU'IL TE PLAIT, I get tears in my eyes: such a magnificent tune and progression! And I'm happy that Morricone still has the ability to write such a masterpiece.

You therefore deserve full praise for that evening. And thanks also for mentioning Bruce's whistling on that Varèse compilation. I will check whether I have it.

Laurent
