INTRADA Announces:

DOUBLE INDEMNITY: FILM NOIR AT PARAMOUNT
Music by MIKLóS RóZSA, HUGO FRIEDHOFER, FRANZ WAXMAN, GAIL KUBIK, LEITH STEVENS, HEINZ ROEMHELD, and VICTOR YOUNG
INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 335

Following the releases of the vintage Paramount scores The Lost Weekend and Desert Fury, Intrada's next entry is a 2-CD set featuring seven different composers writing for film noir classics. The headliner is Miklós Rózsa's Oscar-winning score to Double Indemnity, in near complete form. Rózsa composed three principal motifs for the film. A restless “conspiracy” theme dominates his score, but it is the powerful murder theme that opens the film and the composer returns to this theme repeatedly with an almost tragic quality. The third principal theme is a love theme.

But that's not all! This album also contains the surviving elements of several other Noir scores:

Hugo Friedhofer's Ace in the Hole
Franz Waxman's Sorry, Wrong Number
Gail Kubik's The Desperate Hours
Leith Stevens' The Scarlet Hours
Heinz Roemheld's Union Station
Victor Young's I Walk Alone

Friedhofer’s Ace in the Hole deftly matches the unusual mixture of tones Billy Wilder achieved in his unusually bleak dissection of modern journalism. For Sorry, Wrong Number, Waxman set the film’s anxious tone with a dramatic main title cue which incorporated phone sound effects. In The Desperate Hours, Gail Kubik took an unusual and daring approach, writing and recording a score he described as “pointillistic … a series of sounds which were completely unpredictable: you didn’t know when the next sound was coming or where it was coming from.”

For The Scarlet Hour, Leith Stevens supplied suitably dramatic and agitated original cues for key scenes, but the main musical focus of the film is the original song “Never Let Me Go,” written by the team of Jay Livingston and Ray Evans. Although the main titles of Union Station don’t list a composer, Heinz Roemheld scored the picture, yet little of his music ended up in the final film. Finally, the nearly 30 minutes of Victor Young's I Walk Alone features a vivid and varied score including bluesy music and exciting chase music.

Most of the music in this album was sourced from 35mm magnetic film stored in the Paramount vaults. Desperate Hours is three-track stereo. The Scarlet Hour is in “quasi stereo” because there were “directional angles” for certain cues, while all the other film tracks are mono.

Miklos Rozsa
Label: Intrada Special Collection Volume ISC 335
Date: 1944 - 1956
Time:
Tracks: 64

Film Noir pictures from Paramount with dramatic soundtracks are examined in exciting world premiere 2-CD set. Miklos Rozsa, Hugo Friedhofer, Franz Waxman, Victor Young, several other composers are featured. Leading the way is powerhouse, influential Miklos Rozsa soundtrack for equally powerful, influential Billy Wilder classic, Double Indemnity (1944), with Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray, Edward G. Robinson. Angular main theme that unfolds in deliberate fashion is centerpiece. Agitated secondary suspense ideas, blossoming romantic tune also have their say. Legendary final scene stands out with tragic, ever-building "So Long Keyes" leading to anguished fortissimo "Finale". Nearly 39 minutes of intense, magnificent Rozsa. Following is superb Hugo Friedhofer soundtrack from Billy Wilder's stunning, cynical "media circus" picture Ace In The Hole (1951), starring Kirk Douglas, Jan Sterling. Intense "Prelude", somber "Sand Trickle" cave-in material, sultry "Platinum Blonde" tune are amongst several dramatic sequences. Highlight is tragic, tent-collapsing "Grand Finale" to grim proceedings. Subsequent "Tatum's Death And End Title" provides solid wrap-up. Sorry, Wrong Number (1948) affords Franz Waxman considerable room for intense, edged action, dark suspense music to accompany emotionally-charged Anatole Litvak film with Burt Lancaster, Barbara Stanwyck. One track by Nathan Van Cleave also appears. Victor Young follows suit with equally charged, dramatic soundtrack for I Walk Alone (1948), directed by Byron Haskin, starring Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas as clashing ex-partners in crime. Thirty minutes of edged, aggressive music features some of Young's most powerful ever. The Desperate Hours (1955) happily survives in stereo, boasting unusual, rhythmically potent soundtrack by Gail Kubik with one track by Daniele Amfitheatrof. William Wyler directs, Humphrey Bogart, Fredric March star in suburban hostage story. Leith Stevens has his say with dark, agitated soundtrack for 1956 Michael Curtiz picture The Scarlet Hour, with Tom Tryon, Carol Ohmart. Score also features melody from film's original song "Never Let Me Go" by Livingston/Evans. Rounding out exciting collection are three cues by Heinz Roemheld from Union Station (1950), Rudolph Mate's kidnap thriller with William Holden. 2-CD set restored from 35mm magnetic film recordings courtesy Paramount Historical CDs project. Chris Malone handles audio restoration, Lukas Kendall guides production, Scott Bettencourt offers informative notes. Dramatic "flipper" cover plus generous booklet chock full of color posters, stills designed by Joe Sikoryak. All scores recorded at Paramount Pictures Scoring Stage. Irvin Talbot, Franz Waxman, Gail Kubik, Daniele Amfitheatrof, Leith Stevens, Victor Young conduct. Intrada Special Collection 2-CD available while quantities and Interest remain!

Ace In The Hole

Harried writer attempts to meet deadline; accidentally includes article. Title should be "Ace In Hole." Consistency is lost. Reader wonders how writer thinks it good idea to omit articles. Reader hopes engineer takes greater care with audio than writer does with language.

Probably told to add it since the two main words alone suggest something not for polite society.

"Double Indemnity" along with "The Lost Weekend" are two of my very favorite Rózsa scores. Amazing that Intrada has managed both this year!

Thank you Intrada for this fantastic release. 38 minutes for DOUBLE INDEMNITY, 30 minutes for
I WALK ALONE, 15 minutes each for ACE IN THE HOLE and SORRY, WRONG NUMBER. I hope they can find more Rozsa and Young scores at Paramount. Franz Waxman's THE FURIES would be a wish come true.

It is indeed a fantastic release Cody. I can't wait to get it. I was especially happy to see 30' from Victor Young's I WALK ALONE!

I too hope more Rozsa, Young, Waxman etc. can be found. THE FURIES would be wonderful and Victor Young scored quite a few film noir at Paramount. Not to mention Rozsa's FIVE GRAVES TO CAIRO.

Many thanks to Doug, Roger, Lukas, Joe etc.! smile

Looks like an incredibly exciting release, though I can't help wishing more of SORRY, WRONG NUMBER had been salvageable. I'm happy with what's included, though, and can't wait to hear the entire set

Jaws and Back to the Future on one end, releases like this on the other. Intrada is just terrific.

I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that Paramount located Double Indemnity tracks and that this album came together for Intrada. I am glad to see people as excited as I am!

i was wondering if Double Indemnity is missing music compare to the Isolated Score on the bluray uk release?

That iso score on the Blu is actually a music-and-effects track which we combined with the surviving music masters to present as much of the score as possible—some of it was not releasable due to FX and poor quality in general.

This incredible release has the expected hallmarks of a Lukas Kendall production. Chiefly among them his great ability at selecting, finding and putting together an irresistible combination of historic scores. One cannot thank him (and Intrada, of course) enough for his tireless efforts.
