Original Television Score by Stanley Myers

Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles."
The Film-
Bringing the most recognized work of science fiction in American literature to the screen was no small feat. For more than 20 years Hollywood had tried and failed to film Ray Bradbury's novel, until the success of "Star
Wars" in the late 1970s spurred veteran producer Charles Fries and director Michael
Anderson ("Logan's Run") to mount a three-part, six-hour mini-series for NBC. Genre favorite Richard Matheson adapted Bradbury's work with the author's approval, and an international cast included Rock Hudson, Fritz Weaver, Darren McGavin, Roddy McDowall, Bernadette Peters and Barry Morse. Harsh criticism of the completed film by Bradbury delayed its release, but it eventually aired to an audience of more than 20 million viewers. Nearly a quarter of a century later, "The Martian Chronicles" is still a fan
favorite and airs frequently on the Sci-Fi Channel.
The Music-
Stanley Myers was at the height of his career - and just nominated for an Academy Award for "The Deer Hunter" - when he was chosen to score "The Martian Chronicles." Prolific in his music for both film and television, Myers was one of the earliest composers to integrate electronics into a conventional orchestral work. In his score for this film, Myers
augments traditional strings, woodwinds and brass with electric keyboards and
guitar, and a variety of ancient wood flutes to represent the aliens and their culture. As Bradbury's text depicts the colonization of Mars as an allegory for the European conquest of the New World, so Myers' themes draw on
musical influences from the indigenous people of the Americas.
The Album-
The Airstrip One Company, under license from MGM and with the participation of the Royal College of Music and the estate of the late composer, present the world premiere release of Stanley Myers' score to "Ray Bradbury's The
Martian Chronicles." The 65 minute CD features music from all three parts of the epic science fiction drama. A 24 page full-color booklet
accompanies the album and includes dozens of photos (most never-before-seen), an international poster gallery, pre-production sketches, storyboards, sheet music, an in-depth analysis of the making of the mini-series and its music, interviews with screenwriter Richard Matheson, producers Charles Fries and Dick Berg, designer Assheton Gorton, original articles by director Michael Anderson, actor Bernie Casey and author Ray Bradbury, and a special tribute to Stanley Myers written by Hans Zimmer.

I just re-played this for the first time in years. The blending of electronics and orchestra is really nice, and there is great variety. For a score definitely out of the norm for Stanley Myers, he really nailed this one.

|
This was a great miniseries that truly captured the spirit of Bradbury's novel (with only the occasional undercranked miniature to speak out against it), and what great music too. That main theme can have you head-bopping and toe-tapping for days. Wish this one was still around. How temporal the life of these specialty releases. Guess we should be grateful we're all here to enjoy the ones coming out now.

Oh, Zippy, I couldn't agree more. I just love all of Myers's 60s scores. Otley has got to be one of the wittiest, joyous comedy scores ever. And No Way To Treat A Lady has those 2 tracks that kill me each time--the haunting main title and the Miller of Dee.

After more than 2 weeks of absence, I want to see what I've missed and now discover this!
The sighting of this thread blew me away like nothing else in a long time.
First a euphoric flight high to the summit of Mount Everest, followed by a fall to the deepest point
of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific.
If I were today 30 or 40 years older, I would have died of heart failure by now!
For me, too, this soundtrack of THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES by Stanley Myers is one of those special highlights
in my CD collection.
As a child, I used my cassette recorder to record the episodes of this mini-TV series on audio cassettes.
Unfortunately, as I found confirmed on the internet in the late 90s, there had been no release of the music in any form.
Since the mini-TV series is not STAR TREK and Stanley Myers is not a composer of the rank of John Williams or
Jerry Goldsmith, at the turn of the millennium I no longer had any expectation that there would ever be a release
of this music.
When the AIRBORN CD suddenly appeared out of nowhere in 2002, the joy was as great as when I first saw
this thread a few minutes ago.
Unfortunately the 2002-CD was a truly bittersweet experience.
The CD brought so much beautiful music in perfect sound quality from my childhood; but unfortunately also the realization that not every second of the music used in the series came from Stanley Myers.
The additional recordings by Richard Harvey were unfortunately not included!
But in the years that followed I was forced to make my peace with this CD release.
Having 90% of the music is always better than nothing!
LA-LA LAND RECORDS and other CD labels have repeatedly re-released soundtracks in an improved version
n the past few years, which had already had a solid CD release. You remember DIE HARD or, most recently,
ROBIN HOOD - PRINCE OF THIEVES by Michael Kamen.
When I just saw the title of this thread in connection with LA-LA LAND RECORDS as the author, a thought hit me like lightning:
LLL did it again and released an old soundtrack release in a new, improved (especially complete) version!
A new release for the 40th anniversary? That would be perfect!
As I was just about to look at the details of this "new" CD release, my emotional fall from the summit of Mount Everest began!
Why is LLL announcing a CD release of the CD label AIRSTRIP ONE? That was the old CD!
Then of course I saw the date of the first thread post from LLL and began to realize that it was really about the 2002 CD from AIRSTRIP ONE.
So no new CD release of THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES from LA-LA LAND RECORDS!
There I am now lying at the bottom of the Mariana Trench with a broken heart!
I think rarely has a thread title me misdirected as this one.
What is the rationale behind this LA-LA LAND RECORDS announcement in 2002?
Was the AIRSTRIP ONE CD label a forerunner to LA-LA LAND RECORDS?
Or should the soundtrack originally be released by LA-LA LAND RECORDS (LLL was founded in 2002)?
What exactly is behind the formulation:

I mean, why did LA-LA LAND RECORDS announce the AIRSTRIP ONE CD back then?
Was there a connection between the two CD labels or the production of this Soundtrack-CD?
In any case, I will now have to live on with the old THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES CD from AIRSTRIP ONE.
This CD is of course a lot better than the old audio cassettes with all the dialogues and sound effects!
