hi all

Later this year, we will be re-releasing Ron Goodwins score for the animated Danish feature "Valhalla".
This was Goodwin's final score, and it's really really good!

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the film, and I would love your (the film music experts) opinion on something.

We will, of course, release all of the score for the film BUT we are in posession of Goodwin's synth demo along with early material from the film two original composers (Danes Bent Hesselman and Jussi Adler-Olsen).

Would you prefer a release like this to be "just" the score, or would you like an extra disc of demo material as well?

We apreciate all of your input smile

Thanks,

Jesper

That's a good question. Since this release is not of high priority for me I would say score only (sorry I like Goodwin but prefer old scores). This might represent more the opinion of those are only unlikely to click on this thread than those who will answer below. However, this is no harm in having more than less, and that would not change my decision to buy it, even for a few dollars more.

Having the rejected score sounds like a good idea, while not part of the original score, that is still a "score" and might end up being a good one. I think most people here would consider a rejected score release equally valuable.

I have the 'Label X' (Europe) CD which runs at 23 tracks and 43 minutes. Will you be offering the same material, or will you be providing additional score?

Personally speaking, bonus synth mockups of the score would be of no interest.

I also have the Label X CD, as well as the original vinyl lp release (Replay Records - Denmark), and would vote for the whole works. It would be great too if you could use some of the animation art for the packaging, which the Label X release completely lacked. The lp jacket is quite colorful.

Personally, I find demos quite interesting. They are not always a mere reduction of the final piece; sometimes, they represent an earlier, otherwise unrecorded stage of the composition, and have the potential to reveal fascinating details about the work as it evolved in the composer's mind. Not having heard these particular demos, I can't speak to them specifically ... but I would say that if they shed any new light on Goodwin's process, I'd be curious to hear them.

And of course, alternate approaches from other composers are always interesting to hear.

The demos and the rejected score sound like a great idea.

EDIT:
By the way, what is the catalogue number for your first release? I did a quick search and I can't find it. I'm creating a listing for your label at ScorePedia.

I agree! A synth demo from a Silver Age pencil-and-paper composer would be quite a curiousity. Hopefully including it and the other demos won't raise the price too much...

By all means, a release that features the demos as well as Ron Goodwin's score, would be a great tribute to movie scores when they found us and were truly worth the composer's hard work ethic.

Any update when this will be out?

We do hope to release the album around October (to match the 30th anniversary of the film).
At the moment it looks like it'll be a double cd with Goodwins score on disc 1 and 60 minutes of extra material on disc 2.
Most of the material on disc two will not be by Goodwin, but the two composers who were on board to begin with, before Goodwin replaced them.
Many of their themes made it into the film though.

Thanks for your interest smile

I'm glad the decision was made to include the original score with the used one.

How could one not like something like this?

PlantSounds, October passed with no release. Is this still coming out for the 30th anniversary year or will it be a 2017 release? Your details about it being a two disc set are tantalizing, but a little confusing...are you saying Goodwin adapted some of the earlier composers' work, or was this something of a White Fang situation (where both Poledouris and Zimmer scores were used in part)?

Thanks very much for your work on this to include the extra material, especially since some of it actually remains in the film.

Heres is the original thread, bumped.
This is what plantsounds updated

Hi all

Quite a lot of people have been asking us about the 30th Anniversary Edition of Ron Goodwin's final film score VALHALLA.

Last year we teased a 2 disc release, and thought it only fair to give an update on the project.

Long story short, we have everything ready for the release.

We are waiting for the final approval from Sony Music Denmark, but unfortunately that is taking quite a while longer than we expected (and were told).

We hope to bring you this release around september, and we'll be back with all the info, tracklist etc. when we recieve confirmation from Sony.

Happy easter everybody.

Any further update? Has Sony killed it?
