In response to John's response on the Best Score of All Time thread....and since I don't want to be off topic on that post http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/smile.gif">

Screen Archives currently has Body Double Complete for $32....well worth it! Sound is great, and I would surely make a CDR for anyone....if I had a CDR machine http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/frown.gif"> DOH!
I used to watch the film and record the key dialogue free scenes there.
It's a great score, and I'm surprised there isn't more mention of it.
Also if you can, get the LPS for The Howling, Tourist Trap, Piranha, Crawlspace, Hercules....all terrific listening.
Dressed to Kill is probably his masterpiece, and a nice candidate for expansion http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/wink.gif">
Hell, even his goofy pop scores(Dancers,Appt. with Death, Tchin-Tchin,Over the Brooklyn Bridge,Don Camillo) are fun to listen to IMHO.
So whadda ya think gang???
And since I shamefully don't have it yet, what score of the past does Up at the Villa compare to?
Does it return to the love themes of old by Donaggio? Or does it continue the less liked electronic music he recently has seemed to favor?

NP: Year of Living Dangerously (Jarre)

All the best!

Calling John Maher!

The Sean eh? http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/smile.gif">
Well, ya know that all of us Sean's seem to love film music! Now why is that.....

I'm sure that John and I could come up with some nice starting points for ya Marian!
Donaggio always writes in a melodic vein, even if the situation is quite the opposite.
The sad news is that most of his scores are still on LP http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/frown.gif">
Good news for Vinylphiles...bad for CDFolk.
Start reissuing this stuff people!!

NP: Almost an Angel(Jarre)..what can I say! Im on a Maurice kick right now...can ya blame me http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/wink.gif">

I have a CD-R, so why don't you send me you're copy of "Body Double", and then I can make a CD-R, then return it to you. Seriously, where is Screen Archives?? I cannot find it on the net. I would love to have this recording.

Thanks.

Sean, thanks for the info. I couldn't find a listing for "Body Double" (under any of the categories), so I contacted them about its availability. You're right, it's a great place!

I'm into the Brian De Palma/Pino Donaggio collaboration big time; I'm a big admirer of all the scores to De Palma's early thrillers: Carrie--another great candidate for expansion--Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, Body Double, Raising Cain (not so early, really). This collaboration is among my favorites in all of filmdom. It became hard to separate the contribution these two made to each other's work, they became so associated with one another. But Body Double was sort of a master's thesis for each of these guys with regard to working within their signature styles. I just got the film on dvd; looks great, though the sound is a little pinched; serviceable enough, however. Those with 5.1 systems will have to make due with a standard, 2.0 Dolby soundtrack... Otherwise, great transfer.

Marian! Where did you hear this? What is DePalma's next project!
I would LOVE it http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/biggrin.gif"> if these two worked together again!
Raising Cain is a good score, but doesn't aspire to the heights of Carrie,D to K, Body Double, Blow Out,etc.
It would do this youngster much good to see these guys collaborate on a old fashioned suspenser as they have before.
I know, ever forward right?
Just indulge me one time! http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/biggrin.gif">

For anyone who appreciates this composer's work, you MUST get the Import CD DePalma/Donaggio!
It excises the Raising Cain tracks and adds more to Dressed to Kill,Blow Out and Body Double in it's place, cues that are not on the US issue.
It is WELL WORTH the hunt, since it has the most gorgeous, passionate reading of The Museum from DtoKill.
Maestri Massara really ups the drama about ten notches in this recording, and the number of players is quite apparent versus the Varese CD.

More to come....Viva Donaggio!

Sean,

De Palma's next film is called "Femme Fatale". It is to have a score by Donaggio, and star Uma Thurman. Filming is to begin in November. As of today, Thurman is not signed.

HOLY KATZ! http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/eek.gif"> !!!
I must have had my head in the sand not to know about that one!
How cool, I can hardly contain myself!:0
Let's all cross our fingers and hope that DePalma doesn't have a "moment" and decide to use someone like R.Sakamoto again.
Snake Eyes is a good score, but I would have MUCH rather heard some classic Pino on that film.
Everytime I watch that movie, I tend to "recast" the score, as it might be written by Donaggio.
Femme sounds fun though, maybe another D to K is on the way!
So here's my forgotten Donaggio pick for today...OOP of course http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/frown.gif">
Zelly and Me....
I've still got the LP and play it semi-frequently.
It's a gorgeous score with chamber styled themes, quasi-classical interludes, brief suspense passages, the expected piano and flute rendition of the main theme, even an operatic cue(Eagle House).
Too bad the soprano is just awful on that cue http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/frown.gif">
Almost forgot the long acoustic guitar "B" theme heard in a few cues.
And the waltz that closes the film is gorgeous(The Locked Bedroom).
It always reminds me of how Donaggio tends to end his albums with a swirling waltz of some sort(Carrie,Tourist Trap,Dressed to Kill),before leading into the end titles.
If you haven't seen the film Zelly and ME.....DON"T! http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/mad.gif">
It is just about the most depressing, mean-spirited piece of junk I've ever seen in my life! And I'll watch anything!!!
The movie seems to enjoy the mistreatment of the lead child actress....AVOID! Its sheer torture...

NP: In Country(Horner)

Ciao for now!

Hmmmm... I have a Milan compilation called Brian De Palma • Pino Donaggio, but this can't be the one you mentioned. It has excerpts from Carrie, Home Movies, Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, Body Double and Raising Cain, but all are from the original recordings, I think.

I'd love to see Blow Out on DVD. In this case, considering the movie's subject, a good remastered audio track would also be great. I just got the Carlito's Way DVD this week, it's one of my very favourite movies. Unfortunately, the image quality is not very impressive from what I've seen so far (didn't have the time to watch the movie yet). There's a European release scheduled for Februrary, I hope the image quality on this one will be better.

Marian:

The De Palma/Donaggio cd OHM was talking about was--more or less--the domestic version of what was originally an import album (mine was Italian, on the Milan label), entitled: Donaggio - De Palma: Love and Menace. The catalog number was CH 384. The US domestic release added cues from the Raising Cain album and trimmed a few cues away from the Blow Out and Body Double passages featured on the import version of the album (not entirely sure if the other selections--of Carrie, Home Movies, Dressed to Kill--remained intact).

Here's the cue list for Blow out and Body Double off the import album:

Blow Out

Prelude (End Title) - 3:05
Blow Out - 2:30
Fire Works - 2:03
Sally's Death - 3:45

Body Double

Claustrophonby - 3:21
Love and Menace - 4:48
Drill of Death - 2:54
Mental Chase - 1:33
Brain Hunt - 3:11
Body Double - 3:45

All the music on the original import represented new performances conducted by Donaggio's ususal conductor, Natale Massara, though I suspect the Raising Cain tracks were merely taken from the Cain soundtrack album.

The Massara sessions are pretty great; only once or twice did I prefer the original film sessions of these scores. Sometimes the electronics were allowed to dominate, the female chorus was absent from Dressed to Kill, and the arrangement of the Body Double track was enhanced with a pulse-like beat which I could've done without. Otherwise, an awesome compilation.

That aside, where are people getting confirmation that Donaggio will reteam with De Palma on his next film, Femme Fatale? Sounds awesome, just wish I could count on it. Good as the Cain score was, I hope Donaggio opts for a lusher orchestral arrangement this time out; RC was sort of pared down and lacked oopmh.

I also have the Cain-less version of the Donaggio/De Palma album and it's excellent - especially as Body Double and the fabulous Blow Out are otherwise unavailable. (Don't tell me about the boots - I won't have 'em!).

The only other Donaggios I have are Meridian, The Gamble and Don't Look Now. All of them are okay but nowhere near as luscious as his scores for De Palma.

Mine's also a Milan album:

Carrie:
1. Contest Winners
2. Bucket of Blood
3. For The Last Time We'll Play

Home Movies:
4. Main Title Theme

Dressed to Kill:
5. The Shower
6. The Transformation • The Storm • The Revelation

Blow Out:
7. Blow Out
8. Sally's Death

Body Double:
9. Claustrophoby
10. Love and Menace
11. Drill of Death
12. Body Double

Raising Cain:
13. Cain Takes Over
14. Love Memories

But as I said, I think they're all from the original recordings. At least I can't find a note on the album that says anything different. It's been a long time since I played it, though.

NP: Hollow Man (Jerry Goldsmith)

I would be playing Goldsmith's Hollow Man if I'd snapped it up. As for the film: engaging knock-down, drag-out Verhoeven pulp. Nowhere near as slyly subversive or satirical as Starship Troopers, but the V-man was saddled with a lesser screenplay this time.

I remember really, really digging Donaggio's work on "Crawlspace," though I'm assuming that album is so hard to come by that acquiring it would call for the severing of at least one arm, a leg...and a handful of digitals. If anyone's got a tip on where this recording can be found, I'd appreciate a heads-up. Crawlspace featured Klaus Kinski as a crusty, modern-day Nazi trundling around through the network of, uh, crawlspaces in his apartment building, spying on his tenants, etc. Donaggio's score featured his usual taught, string arrangements and light use of electronics. He did a sweeping, germanic-style end title.

Once again, can we count on Donaggio for De Palma's next, Femme Fatale?

This is pretty funny, I JUST bought Dressed to Kill and am listening to it right now. I NEVER saw the film and am not finding the score enjoyable. I KNOW I AM IN THE MINORITY HERE!!!!

I LIKE THE HOWLING BETTER.....but what do I know? I think its a fantastic score and I like it better than Dressed to Kill just cuz its darker. So far in this score im listening to if I'm NOT imagining a SLOW MOTION pillow fight montage, Im picturing the cliched couple running on the beach splashing water in their faces....and Im already on track 8!!!

oh well...
