Did ANY of you ever have any doubt?!?!?!?!

given his age, i had some, but that's mostly because of the fact that JW could suddenly pass away

No need to worry unnecessarily. He's displayed excellent form -- better than in years, in fact -- in his last few appearances.

I was there too! So glad to see him in person again. I hope he has the strength to keep going with the next project as he definitely sounds fragile, and with his conducting only half the program I wonder if he might enlist some help with the next movie.

Nice to have him confirm something I thought was already announced! Funny, this is the third concert of his I've attended and each has involved him giving clues to his participating in upcoming installments. Also fitting that most of the night revolved around Star Wars with the passing of Kenny Baker that evening.

I thought SW7 was... alright, but could've been much better, maybe SW8 is much better.

Is there some reason you couldn't post this in the existing thread instead of starting anew one of your own?

Is there a particular reason you have to be a donkey about it? Chill.

He's always harping on others for posting duplicate threads. A simple search of "Episode 8" easily returned the existing thread in 1 second. You chill.

Did ANY of you ever have any doubt?!?!?!?!

Seeing as Williams said several times that he wasn't sure if he wanted to do the next one, sure.

This is great news. He could easily have bowed out, but him scoring 8 means he will likely do 9 if he is able to finish out the trilogy, but I'm sure he will be done after that.

Then again, I thought the same thing after he finished III. :-)

I assumed those quotes were said in jest while hinting he would indeed return: "I told the producers I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do the next one, but told them I didn’t want anyone else doing it either." And in every interview about The Force Awakens, he said how much he loved being involved and appreciated the chance to expand on his previous scores. As others have said, the only thing that could stop his involvement is his health, which at the moment seems to be pretty good.

I assumed those quotes were said in jest

I think they were partly in jest, but revealed a truth. Williams comes from a different time in filmmaking from J.J. Abrams. This is obvious. For most of his career, Williams has been handed essentially finished reels, scored them, and been done. Obviously, there have always been revisions from time to time. But by and large, he's scored the films and moved on. Abrams comes from a different school (I'm not saying just him – it's very common now), born of technology that allows filmmakers to continually tweak their movies until very close to the release date. Williams scored and rescored "The Force Awakens" over months and months, a very very long time. Younger composers are used to this, but Williams has had the luxury of mostly avoiding it. I heard rumblings that Williams, at 83, was wondering if he still wanted to put himself through this, or just work with Spielberg from now on, who shares his rhythms.

So I do suspect Williams, at least right after "The Force Awakens" was finished, was quite possibly contemplating leaving it at that. So yes, I had a bit of doubt whether he'd come back. I'm pleased that he will be, since I really loved "The Force Awakens" score.

Been hoping and waiting for this to be confirmed and as is clear from my avatar and username this is a big deal for me, as I'm sure it is for many others. I hope that Mr Williams gets to work on this as soon as possible so as to avoid any potential scheduling conflicts with whatever Mr Spielberg ends up doing. TFA was a sublime score from an absolute Master and I'm thrilled Williams will be building on that. That's said, I dread the inevitable moans of "this is so disappointing" and "Williams is on auto-pilot again" and so on when Ep8 gets released *rolls eyes*

** Not from me! I'm not much of a fan of the movies, except for the effects, production design and of course, the music. I think TFA is one of my favorite SW scores, especially for Ren's theme, which is affecting and masterful, the way it segues from the intimate to the adventurous.
