Kaplan's score to this episode has always been a favourite of mine. Shows that innovation and creativity for television can equally match and even surpass movie scoring.
Great video by the way. A perfect analysis of a fantastic score contribution that has been remembered and enjoyed by millions of fans the world over.
This is a great video, with expert, studious analysis by Shem von Schroeck.
For someone who appreciates the art of film music without the benefit of musical training such as myself, this breakdown is fascinating. I've read many times of Kaplan's Wagnerian approach, but to see the complexity of how the various themes are used and interwoven (at sometimes lightning speed!) attests to the composer's genius, and von Schroeck's for musically digesting it for us.
The score from THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE, monumental for TV at that time, is not only my favorite composition of all time to a television show, but also ranks among my favorite across the realm of all film music. Kaplan was a great composer, but his work in the late 60's for television, especially STAR TREK, was his best.
Also loved his (yet to be heard on recording) score for the 1968 Fox television film SHADOW ON THE LAND, which at one time could be viewed on YouTube. This score is also complex and fascinating, with some action cues reminiscent of his STAR TREK work.
Thanks for posting!
By the way, von Schroeck also mentions a video called DOOMSDAY MACHINE REVEALED that he did. Can anyone post a link for this, please?
Caught this a few years back. Very accomplished and creative demonstration of the unique contribution of proactive, character driven, incidental music in visual storytelling.
