A silly question: is there a reason why NFL has never had a thread on this side of the board for discussion of the sport generally? I recognise we've discussed the NFL music at times in General, but we don't seem interested in the sport itself...

As for me, I'm just happy the Falcons did well this weekend against the Panthers smile

I used to be a big football fan from the 70's thru the 90's. But I've gotten bored by the sport and it's dumb rules. It's gotten less fun and more convoluted. I also grew up watching outdoor games. I miss the snow and rain. The fog bowl was a classic. wink

I only came to it recently as a result of seeing a game between the Raiders and Dolphins at Wembley Stadium in London in 2014. It's a very different experience to conventional team sports like Football (Soccer) and Rugby (American Football's origin) because of its more structured way of playing. That might be why I generally prefer it to those two (though I keep an eye on one team, Bournemouth, currently in the UK's Premier League). Funny thing: after I figured out a team to follow in NFL (the Atlanta Falcons) I found out they had the same kit colours as Bournemouth, red and black! smile

Steelers played well this week, so I'm a happy camper. (Of course, if they had played like they did last week, I think I'd have shit a brick.)

The main reason for me is that I’m pretty much done with the NFL. I’m sick of multimillionaire players spouting off about the unfairness of America, the (IMO) unprofessional behavior and glamor and glitz.

Touchdown celebrations, etc., are fine, but nowadays seems like some guys are so over-the-top with almost every play. Leave your politics and protests at home and just play the game.

Growing up in the 60s and 70s I really loved Pro Football and I still watch the old “This Week In Pro Football” and Super Bowl highlights shows, etc., and listen regularly to the music from NFL Films.
If anyone wants to start a thread on “the good ole days”, I’ll be glad to participate.

According to a piece at Forbes.com:

"It seems likely that the numerous #BoycottNFL online campaigns and fan outrage aimed at the National Anthem protests in the NFL have taken a toll in terms of viewership this season. Additionally, cord-cutting continues to eat into traditional TV’s ratings at an alarming rate. But could there be something else at play?

"We’re barely a year removed from the NFL setting all-time records in viewership, yet now the league is on pace for its lowest ratings in years. That’s a sharp and unexpectedly sudden turn.

"Given the politicized controversies and the variety of streaming options this year, have we reached a cumulative point of football fatigue? The numbers suggest so."

I think it's people cutting cable. I've never seen an NFL controversy hurt their ratings with it's rabid fan base.

A little satire to illustrate why the NFL boycott is a thing now:

I think it's people cutting cable.

I think that is a huge part of it. Monday Night Football was basically an American tradition available on OTA TV for decades and then they decided to hide it behind a paywall on ESPN. Thursday night football is on OTA TV the first half of the year and then they move the rest of the season behind a paywall on the NFL Network. Talk about confusing the viewers. They probably cut their regular viewers in half by doing this. People just move on to something else for entertainment. As a huge NFL fan I'm extremely worried all regular seasons games will be moved to cable like the rest of the major sports.

Down here in New Zealand most sport is now pay TV only. Some NFL, Monday and Thursday Nite are still on FTA but going by your post maybe not for much longer..

I only have basic cable nowadays and I find it very annoying that one of the staples of American entertainment was the ability to watch sports on over the air TV.

Now even local college football is spread out over a thousand premium channels. Then there's other sports that sometimes gets delayed and they switch the games over too other channels I don't have. Cable companies are cutting their own throats.

Then take something like Hockey. You can't cut cable and buy the NHL internet package because it DOESN'T include your home team games or other broadcast games on your cable system. I would never pay for a service like that.

In the U.K., with the exception of a few major events (Wimbledon, The Olympics), most major sport is now firmly in the grip of subscription TV, so it's something I'm used to. I can't of course watch any of the NFL games live except the very few that get through on the BBC, and even that is a problem for me right now due to the landlord I live having no license for it and no desire to have anything to do with a license getting anywhere near his property. So I follow what I can online. It's not quite the same though, and of course that's exactly why the TV companies (mainly Murdoch's Sky here) have got their clammy hands on any sport of interest.

I'll take our win against the Broncos smile

It seems Denver were having a bit of trouble with the QB though, and their defense seemed a bit less solid than previously.

I'm wondering how Dan Quinn will feel being back on home turf against his old team for our next game at the Seahawks...

Well that was close. 24-26 at Seattle. Good 3rd quarter but the interception really didn't help us, and Ryan's last drive with four incompletes shows we still don't quite get it right. A good showing though against one of the tougher teams in the NFL.

Look at how many responses are in Vincent Price's Football Thread. Tons of responses from my
Brit Buddies.

Now we have the NFL topic right here that should be loaded with lots of comments about REAL football. wink Where is everyone?

Yeah, Ian, Seattle almost blew it. We live about 3 hours from Seattle so we are big Seahawk fans, and I'll be cheering them on throughout the season.

Ah, so you're the other 'hawks fan then? I know of one other wink

I'm about five to six hours out of Atlanta (by plane, that is) as I'm in the U.K., so I don't get to see the Falcons play live very often (once in fact, when they were at London's Wembley Stadium in 2014!)

Bu**er. Two weeks in a row we've lost to a field goal now, and both because our defense couldn't hold off the scoring of the opposing team earlier in the game. We may have the highest scoring offense in the NFL this season so far, but our D is really not delivering the goods. Dan Quinn needs to get that sorted, especially as he was DC at Seattle.

Speaking of which, that was a rare result between SEA and ARI.

Ian, to lose by three points is truly a bummer. Sorry about those Falcons.

The overtime between Arizona and Seattle made me bite my nails. I find it unique that a kicker can make a field goal from 40 or more yards and miss from 28 yards. Never say it is over until it is over.

Another season, another year that Belichick, Brady, & Co. make it look easy--especially Brady. I, for one, think it's fantastic that a 40-year-old man is still the best player in the NFL, with no sign of slowing down. It takes a conspiratorial, league front office investigation to derail him. Goodness knows, my Steelers can't do that. (In his career, Brady is now 9-2 against the most successful team in the league, post-merger. Geez.)

There's one thing to be said about our Falcons games - they are at least something of a rollercoaster to follow, and as far as poor ratings due to lack lustre games in this year's season, at least 'we' aren't to blame wink
