Pleasant surprise to me that the classic Jimmie Smith "The Cat" was composed by Lalo.

It is from the 1964 film "Les Felins," aka "Joy House."

How has "Rock Requiem" eluded me all these years? I never even heard of it, and I have tons of Lalo on both LP and CD.

Anyway, "Rock Requiem" is brilliant, pure 1970s Jesus-rock, comparable to David Axelrod's work in the early 1970s.

Since Dot Records and Paramount Records are part of Universal Music, does the set include both "Mission: Impossible" albums?

Yes. They sound better than ever too! So excited to be getting the Quincy Jones box this week. Écoutez le Cinéma really ended my year with a bang by honoring two of my favorite film music composers with box sets!

Good to know. I received my set but have not heard MI yet. The MCA CD didn't sound anywhere near as good as the LPs. I will look forward to hearing the remasters.

On the Schifrin FB, an incredible photo of a film music composers reunion:

By the way, did someone here already order the Schifrin and Quincy Jones sets, finally available on SAE?

Well, with the release of this set, I think I now have all the Lalo Schifrin I need for this lifetime. I have many LPs and CDs. I bought most of the limited edition releases, except for one that had too much yee-haw music for my taste. This collection filled some of the last remaining holes.

And did you think the sound on the M:I tracks was much of an improvement?

I didn't think there was an awful lot of difference myself.

The MCA/One Way CD of the two Mission Impossible albums was one of the first film/TV scores I ever owned on CD. At the time I picked it up, I did not have the LPs.

A few years later, I picked up the LPs, and when I spun them, I remember thinking that the LPs sounded so much better than the CD. I often wonder about the degree to which I really believe that vinyl sounds better than digital, and wonder how much of that is conditioning. But in this case, I do believe that the LPs truly sound better.

Anyway, to answer your question, I do think that the Mission Impossible CD in the Universal France box set sounds better than the old MCA CD. It is a tad on the bright side, but when I roll back the treble and goose the bass a little, I think it sounds really good.

I've got the Mission:Anthology CD, and I really can't hear much difference.

I too had one of the vinyl LPs years ago and it certainly did sound great, but I got rid of it years ago and can't remember what the sound was like in relation to the CD.

The LPs sound more full and have more presence. That first CD sounded like a bad digital transfer to me. It's been a while since I've played them, though. I tend to spin LPs that I don't have on CD.

The one Schifrin thing I want is the "moving out" morning truck cue from Cool Hand Luke--it's one of the coolest cues in the score, and has been left off every release, so I'll probably never see (hear) it.

This will be worth picking up at least for de Sade, Mannix, Whole Lalo Schifrin, and Rock Requiem. If those two Mission Impossible albums sound better than the original release (which sounds pretty bad), it will be worth it for that too.

I will be interested to hear from anyone who can compare this mastering of Mission Impossible to that of the MCA release of the 1980s.

The mastering of this 5cd set over the two Mission Impossible albums and the Mannix album- is an actual improvement over the previous cd releases of the 3 - the sound`s got more clarity and is less reverbed and distortioned and it`s something you notice right away.Kudos to Vincent Malet and everyone involved on this labour of love dedicated to the great maestro!
