THE OMEN: 40th Anniversary Edition Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Jerry Goldsmith UPC: VCL10161175 Release Date: 10/24/2016 Limited Edition of 3000 copies Shipping starts on Oct 24th $ 19.98 This year marks a big anniversary for an epic and historic film and score. It’s hard to believe but The Omen (1976), was released 40 years ago. It’s also hard to believe that our previous “Deluxe Edition” of Jerry Goldsmith’s Academy Award-winning score came out 15 years ago to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary. But here we are. While The Deluxe Edition was indeed significantly expanded from the original soundtrack album release, this score’s biggest fans still missed a few cues and for this new, 40th Anniversary edition we have added an additional six previously unreleased cues, including the unused “It’s All For You.” The entire score has also been newly remastered and we have added a special bonus track featuring Diego Navarro conducting “The Omen Suite” from the 2009 Fimucité tribute to Jerry Goldsmith. An epic release of Jerry Goldsmith’s Oscar-winning masterpiece! U.S. ambassador (Gregory Peck) switches his wife's (Lee Remick) baby with an orphaned boy when their child is stillborn. As the boy grows, disaster surrounds him, beginning with the suicide of his nanny, and as the bodies pile up, his horrified father begins to suspect the boy is evil incarnate and must be destroyed. The Omen was directed by Richard Donner (Superman: The Movie, The Goonies). Tracklist 1. Ave Satani (2:34) 2. On This Night (2:35) 3. The New Ambassador (2:35) 4. Where Is He? (0:55) 5. Muahahaha! Take that, doubters. It's not a series box set but it'll certainly do for now! Here's hoping new versions of the others in the series (the Goldsmith ones at the very least) will follow along in the future. Yavar

So was there only about five minutes missing?.. Oh well. It's a significant work that deserves every note released. Better luck next October for The Haunting, I guess.. Oh, and I like how the unreleased music is represented by a cross. Very fitting in this case.

So is there only Scream 2 and this title only for this announcement? Should I wait to see if more titles are coming or is this it? Only two Club titles from Robert Townson today. There was a recent Club batch but I suspect they decided to hold the two horror titles over until Halloween time. There is the 12 days of horror mystery project that Peter has been posting about...[edit: which I see Last Child beat me to mentioning!] Is this "complete" or will that have to wait until the 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition? I'm pretty certain it is, though I can understand your confusion as it could have been worded a bit more clearly in the press release. Still, it's a 5-6 minutes I'm very happy to get! I recall a lot of people being happy when Kritzerland added even fewer cues to make Poltergeist II complete. Yavar

It may be interesting to see how this edition sells, with only an extra 5 minutes or so and very short extra cues. Even allowing for the "completist" mentality with some. I assume the earlier Deluxe release is still available? Actually the Omen trilogy DEs seem to be out of print on Amazon, though the original Omen DE isn't going for high amounts on the secondhand market or antyhing. We actually have a recent similar precedent that could clue us in on a good sales prediction: Kritzerland's Poltergeist II expanded on Varese's Deluxe Edition of that score with only four previously-missing cues (and I think they added up to less time than the six on the new Omen release). That issue was one of Kritzerland's fastest-selling titles ever, selling out quickly even though they did 1500 copies instead of their usual 1000. And they released it well after the era of fast limited sellouts. Since that was also a not-quite-as-good sequel score to a terrible movie which followed a genuine classic score and film in the original Poltergeist, I think that's pretty impressive. Now this on the other hand is a classic horror score which is even more iconic than the original Poltergeist, celebrating its 40th anniversary, AND it is Jerry Goldsmith's only Oscar win of his long career. And need I remind you that LLL thought it was worthwhile to expand another iconic Goldsmith horror score, Magic, by only a single 25 second cue. Admittedly they did 2000 copies and haven't sold out yet, but I really suspect Varese will do quite well with this definitive reissue of a classic. Yavar

The question I'm pondering is why the extra 5 minutes or so on this release wasn't just included on the previous Deluxe edition. It's not a big enough reason for me to purchase this one again, so I'm just curious. Many Varese "Deluxe Editions" (and even ones without that branding, like Magic) frustratingly left off just a few cues of a score. Poltergeist II was another, only put out complete by Kritzerland a couple years ago, as well as The Final Conflict, which hopefully Varese will eventually also put out complete. In the case of Goldsmith scores specifically, he was still alive at the time of the original Deluxe Editions, and as he was grumpy about "bottlecap collectors" wanting every note of his music, it may have been his decision to leave off those few cues. We know it was him who nixed the inclusion of the film version of the Basic Instinct finale, as released by Prometheus -- this was only recently rectified by Quartet on their reissue from this past year.
