Theodore Shapiro has signed on to score upcoming CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS for DreamWorks Animation. The movie is directed by Rob Letterman (Goosebumps, Shark Tale) and tells the story of two kids who hypnotize their mean high school principal and turn him into their comic book creation, the kind-hearted and elastic-banded Captain Underpants. Nicholas Stoller (Fun with Dick and Jane, Zoolander 2) wrote the screenplay based on the book by Dav Pilkey.

The movie, which is currently in production, should be released by 20th Century Fox on June 2nd, 2017 and will feature the voice talents of Kevin Hart, Nick Kroll, Kristen Schaal and Ed Helms.

What's up with the mystery untitled Pixar film on his IMDb page. Any truth to that?

Nope... he has nothing to do with anything Pixar... maybe someone just confused Pixar with this animation.
I submitted correction a few days ago so hopefully they'll remove it soon.

Good thing I don't buy CDs at the store anymore. Imagine going up to the counter with the soundtrack to CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS in hand?

Shapiro's theme is infectious and reverent to the rich superhero scores of the past while still having its own voice. Wonderfully orchestrated and performed. Bold and heartfelt as well. The three tracks on the song release are simply not enough and i hope the score album is going to be released. The writing on this is really terrific with lots of dynamic section changes, colourful variations on the two themes and a lyricism that the listener can really grab onto regardless if they have or haven't seen the film (when was the last time you could say that?).

I downloaded the three score tracks from 7Digital today. They're great! Shapiro is fantastic... His comedy scores are great, and whenever he gets to do something more action-y and fantasy based, like last year's GHOSTBUSTERS reboot, he's great at that too.

There are three cues on the Shapiro Youtube channel, including "Saving the Day":

I don't like the cheesy synth sounds I heard on two cues.

And sweet merciful crapp -- it's singing the name, bringing back the dread of "Rooobooocop!".

I love the 8 bit synth sounds. And I wouldn't compare CU to Rosenman's Robocop which was a serious film.. CU obviously pays homage to superhero scores but is a kids movie and it succeeds in providing a very singable theme , like kids make up theme own superhero music while they are playing. It's really cool imo. You have to consider the context for the creative decisions that were made. If it were a score like WW, no doubt Shapiro would have played it serious and dramatic. Much of the material in the three tracks from the song release feature muscular, straight ahead action writing that evokes Superman, Raiders, and The Rocketeer; all very accomplished scores.

Good God, Mickey Mousing in a movie called Captain Underpants!?!? Where's their artistic integrity????

2:20 into Saving the Day is some of the best music of the year so far in my opinion. Instantly recognizable as Shapiro's voice, catchy, and better use of the orchestra than SO much of what's out there right now...Whole track is gloriously symphonic comedic writing.

Yes indeed. Terrific writing. Shapiro is one of the most underrated composers IMO. I mean he's got quite a body of successes but I'd love to hear him get a Marvel movie score. With CU, it clearly demonstrates he's got the chops to write this kind of heroic music. We can wish eh?

Well, I am. I care about the score, not the film.

But having said what I said initially, I want to expand a little more on the score:

While the constant stop and go with a little Mickey Mousing is annoying, the score on the other hand is quite well done.

Somebody said it was like the glorious days of the 1980's. I won't go that far, but I will say it comes damn close to something from say, the mid to late 1980's and reaches about -- if I had to use a 1980's Film Score Meter to grade it, with 0% being not at all and 100% being completely so -- 90%. That's a damn fine level to reach in my opinion.

The full score, minus any singing in English words, would likely yield some wonderful suites I could edit together to listen to. I'd just have to wait a few years before playing it in public so people don't look at me and think: That's crazy bastard is playing music from "Captain Underpants", LOL!

Captain Underpants? 1812 Ofarture? Fitting for our brain dead society. Sure to be a hit.
Score sounds promising, what do we get 15 minutes? Gotta make room for fart songs.

Yeah... especially since there is some new CD mediums which can only hold 35 minutes of music... (Infinitely Polar bear is another score similiarly butchered while there was more than enough space left to actually include the complete score and songs together on the same disc). If anyone actually gets to see the movie, don't forget to reveal how much score there actually is in the film...

Btw, short suite from the score is available at http://www.theodore-shapiro.com

I agree with you -- that is a great moment, and it builds nicely until it shifts into another gear. I just can't bring myself to listen to a piece of music with a chorus singing the words "Captain Underpants." If this music was ever released sans-lyrics, I might give it another chance.
