I never did get around to auditioning the rest of the TOS set. I make do with the Fred Steiner/Tony Bremner re-recordings.

You're fixin' to make my head explode.

If you have the 15-CD box and don't want to spring for the 50th Anniversary set, you're still in fantastic shape. Otherworldly shape. You have EVERY EPISODE SCORE from the quarter-inch, first-generation tapes. You have ungodly TONS of timeless music there. It staggers the mind to think you would turn your back on it!

The big examples would go on and on. Just to take one tiny example: Yvonne Craig's dance consumed my attention in "Whom Gods Destroy" for dozens of viewings over the decades. It took the 15-CD box set to reveal that the music from that scene is AMAZING. It's a great melody and a performance of stunning virtuosity. But nobody ever heard it because, you know what they say about green Orion slave girls. NOW YOU CAN HEAR IT.

I still play the Royal Phil re-recordings too, as alternates. But they are barely a particle of the whole story. If you like Bremner's "The Conscience of the King," you'll go NUTS for Mullendore's complete version, with several additional themes including "Phaser Overload." Those violins coming in are like a 60's version of "Battle in the Mutara Nebula." I can't get enough of it.

And speaking of battles, you don't want to hear Fred Steiner's Klingon battle music in "Elaan of Troyius"? Really? And the love theme from that episode? Come on, man! Take your box set off the shelf and start living again.

We're still missing the main title with Shat's monologue. I mean it's as iconic as any of the music in the series.

Maybe Shatner wanted too much.

If only there was someplace where I could hear that. Maybe even something I own?

Your avatar reminded me of the Trek II album. We included the monologue on that and got complaints. Now we didn't include the monologue and we're getting a complaint.

and thus a valuable lesson is learned: you can't win with film music wankers. Q.E.D.

An alternate version would be "the only winning move is not to play". On other hand, going all "Kobayashi Maru" seems to have to worked out well for you, Mr. Bulk. Nicely done, Sir.

Yes but those complaints made sense. wink And I hate to admit it, but now that I have both? I tend to listen to the narrated version just a little bit more. Curse you and your correct arbitration of my taste!

Actually, I also want Mr. Shatner's monologue from TOS, excepting, of course, the very offensive word "man." Please use your magical production gizmos to replace that single word with the more inclusive "one." Maybe Mr. Shatner can be hired to give 50 or 60 readings of the word "one" and you can select the best (least over-the-top) take to then de-age and insert. I won't consider the TOS set complete without it.

No Shat = No Buy

I'd totally be up for the Shatner narration...it's so ingrained in our memories. Maybe they could find a way to include it in the last "bits and pieces" release forthcoming...sometime.

And I'll say it again...that TOS set is just the best thing on my shelf of a 1000+ scores. smile

I had no complaints with Trek II release, and like I said Shat's monologue is as iconic as the music. (as were Nemoy's in Trek II.) As far as a total package I would've liked if it was included. If it couldn't be included because of rights or money issues I understand. Not complaining though, just an opinion.

As I recall the TOS elements we got included a couple of versions of Shatner's narration sans music along with a few other cool things, like James Doohan's fake Klingon distress call from "Friday's Child." Fascinating to hear those recordings...

I unfortunately didn’t buy this set as I overlooked the music in the show, but I started listening to some episode compilations online and was blown away. The Trouble With Tribbles music was really creative with trombones mixed at a higher pitch, and Spectre Of The Gun was really beautiful with songs like “My Name, Love Scene In Old West”, really beautiful stuff on par with Hugo Friedhofer. And the whole of Metamorphosis is spectacular!
