At the risk of sounding ungrateful for all the great Max Steiner CD albums that have been released over the years, are there more Max Steiner CD albums on the way for 2017?
So sad that brilliant works like "Jezebel" (1938), the Oscar-winning "Now, Voyager" (1942), "My Reputation" (1946), "Tomorrow is Forever" (1946), "The Caine Mutiny" (1954), "Escapade in Japan" (1957) and many other delightful Steiner scores could exist on disc without a new recording (admitting that on a few of them we'd have to tolerate some scratch sounds).
In any case, Max Steiner Rules and will always be the great Founder in the sound era (he reportedly didn't like being called a pioneer) of the amazing, and so unfairly often derided and devalued, craft of film music.

Not to mention a 2-CD legit release of the complete tracks to Steiner's masterpiece HELEN OF TROY!
Now that would make 2017 shine!

From the looks of that photo, I'd guess Roy Webb would be the composer of the score accompanying it.
Is that from THE BODY SNATCHER? (At first, I thought it from BEDLAM.)
But both have scores by Mr. Webb.
Most people around here would prefer his score to SINBAD THE SAILOR, which is wonderful.
But I have a predilection for I REMEMBER MAMA, which is probably short enough to be included on a release with the SINBAD tracks.
(Not that either of them is available, let alone complete. I have a Webb compilation release, which includes some SINBAD tracks, but not nearly the full score.
Ah well. Dreams for the start of a New Year....

I'll buy any original Roy Webb (might not jump on adaptation work). Even if it's from scratchy acetates.  If Ray is working on a Webb score that's incredible news!
But if somehow his Sinbad score comes out, I'll be truly over the moon.

I bow to no one in my admiration for SINBAD and my wish to have it on CD, but I also have much love for THE BODY SNATCHER, both film and score. (I took brief time out from the subject at hand to discuss them with Robert Wise when I was interviewing him about STAR TREK-THE MOTION PICTURE.) I'm very grateful for John and Bill's suite on Marco Polo, but I do wish it had included the haunting moment when the murdered street singer's voice is laid over the orchestra...

No, not Webb. My posting of the photo was merely reference to Boris "Cabman Gray" Karloff's lovely line in THE BODY SNATCHER - "You must wait and see, like the children do!"
As for sound from acetate sources, yes they can certainly vary. But I think we've gotten some pretty good sound out of those 60 and 70 year-old discs. ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN, FIGHTER SQUADRON, even DARK VICTORY from 1939 sounds pretty darn good in my humble opinion. Naturally, we would all love to hear these great scores in dynamic digital sound (and thanks to John and Bill, we have LOTS including DON JUAN!), but the shrinking market and the enormous costs of new recordings sometimes leaves Max's original performances as the most practical and practicable way to go.
Naturally, composers like Herrmann and Rozsa have a more erudite level of support and God Bless James Fitzpatrick and Prometheus for doing things like THE THIEF OF BAGDAD. Old Maxie and his schmaltz may not get the nod of the highbrows, but those of us who love raw emotion and overt thrills in our scores still give the old boy our most respectful nod.

Incidentally, WHITE HEAT showed on TCM last night, and I watched it specifically to hear Steiner's music. Wow! I'd never seen the movie, nor heard a note of the score. It's really terrific, with a lot of churning, accelerated chase music and subtle, moody character scoring. A great theme, too. I just recently ordered the Stromberg/Morgan Film Noir CD to get the DARK PASSAGE suite, but now I'm very excited to hear the one from WHITE HEAT as well.
I bought the John Morgan / William Stromberg FILM NOIR CD from SAE in 1996 when it came out.
It was a BMG import from Germany at a hefty price. It's worth every penny. It's one fantastic CD.
Besides WHITE HEAT and DARK PASSAGE, it also has suites from ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT, THE MALTESE FALCON and THE VERDICT. John and Bill also did at the time for BMG Germany THE ADVENTURES OF MARK TWAIN / THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER. Along with Anna they are such a great team, it's a shame a label won't finance another CD or two from them. Let's us know how you like the CD. WHITE HEAT is a GREAT film with a GREAT Max Steiner score!
