Speaking for myself, 1960s is the decade which contains most of my faves. Both Red Desert by Antonioni and Polanski's Cul-de-Sac are neck-'n'-neck on my Top 25 list, but Buñuel's Belle de Jour is my ultimate selection from that Criterion list of 82.
My favorite of the pre-1960 titles listed is Sweet Smell of Success.
[FYI, Phelps, Persona is in my Top 10 but Criterion, for whatever reason, hasn't created an entry for that in their Three Reasons series.]
The thread is young. Besides, posting a long list doesn't lend to as much "food for thought" as one choice.
I suppose the Three Reasons (3R) advertising angle is to appeal to those of us who survived MTV yet can still relate to that formula.

I'll give those 3Rs a look. Geez, so many "international films" I've yet to see! I feel terribly unread, as it were.
Sweet Smell of Success is a film I've seen--as I have posted on this forum before--almost thirty times, though not in many years. A (late) friend of mine and I watched it every Friday for fifteen consecutive weeks. I should check out the Criterion edition.

Here it is:
Hmm. Turns out I have a Criterion account; they have a loyalty program. As if I needed more dvds...Criterion Channel here I come!
Would someone please put my choice up. I cannot recall how to do this anymore. I did view the list and chose Fellini's 'LA DOLCE VITA'. The first time I went to Rome, straight to The Via Venetto! Thanks whoever puts up my film choice!

I love Criterion. In fact, I just watched Criterion's "Ghost World", directed by Terry Zwigoff, this afternoon. I enjoyed it. I'm going to have to watch it again soon with the commentary track on....

There used to be a fair number of Criterion fans on this forum, but they must surely be deceased now.
I've not seen GHOST WORLD--it feels a bit proto-hipster-ish to me--but I adore Zwigoff's CRUMB documentary, plus the added attraction of Thora Birch makes the former a film I'm still interested in seeing.
The Blu-ray is 'mouth-watering', if you appreciate B&W Cinematography, and I certainly do. This film was shot by that expert, JAMES WONG HOWE, and he didn't even merit an Oscar Nomination!
Jim Phelps, if you read this, would you post 'MEDIUM COOL', please, for me. To me, 'MEDIUM COOL' is the absolute definition as THE FILM that best represents the 60's. Not 'Easy Rider', or 'The Graduate', as great as they are, but HASKELL WEXLER'S 'MEDIUM COOL'.
