Thank you to Member as well as Jim Phelps for putting up my requests. So far, not a stinker in anyone's choices. I wish Criterion would do 'ANNIE HALL'.

My pleasure, old sport. smile Yes, any Woody Allen film would be most welcome in the Criterion Collection!

Speaking of Criterion and great films in general, are you--or any FSMers in the USA--a subscriber to Filmstruck?

I've never heard of Filmstruck before, so I did some exploring on the site, courtesy of the link you provided. My thoughts are, 'INTRIGUING'!!. They're offering a 14-day FREE TRIAL, how can you go wrong with that? I wish there were a listing of more Film titles, but under the heading of 'Icons', I found some Laurence Olivier films I have not seen before in any medium, tape, disc, or t.v. Thanks for listing this, in early August I'll sign up for the free trial. (There was one film I was specifically looking for in the Ingmar Bergan listings, but 'FACE TO FACE' was not among the titles. However since it's not available as a high-quality version anywhere else either, I'm o.k. with that.)

I'm "facing" the same quandry as you regarding Face to Face. There are, however, 42 Ingmar Bergman films and a documentary available. The site also includes the bonus features found on Criterion's dvds.

Criterion's website was the way I found out about Filmstruck, since they'd moved over from Hulu.

I've had nothing but positive experiences with the site, and they also have a live chat service for technical issues.

I'd get ANNIE HALL or MANHATTAN if they were released by Criterion.

Anatomy of a Murder (1959)

Otto always pushed the envelope. Impressive stuff for an American film in 1959.

Godzilla

IMO the only film in this series worth seeing more than once.

Where are all the FSM Criterion fans?!?

I love Criterion. In fact, I just watched Criterion's "Ghost World", directed by Terry Zwigoff, this afternoon. I enjoyed it. I'm going to have to watch it again soon with the commentary track on....

There used to be a fair number of Criterion fans on this forum, but they must surely be deceased now. frown

Oh, hardly! At least, I'd have thought a sizeable portion of the entire FSM crowd would be Criterion fans, though I guess one never knows.

I've considered myself a Criterion fan since the laserdisc days, though I actually only ever managed to get a single Criterion release on that format (Raging Bull). I used to pore over their catalogs, though, dreaming of all the other great releases I wanted, a few of which I did get to experience (rentals, library copies, friends' copies, etc.). I'm certainly glad for the DVD and now Blu-Ray era, which aside from considerably improving the actual movie presentations technically has also made them far more affordable than they were on LD, especially with the semiannual Barnes & Noble sales. We still have only 17 Criterion titles on Blu-ray and DVD, but that's 17 times as many as I ever got on laserdisc, and we will definitely get more once the next B&N sale rolls around.

I've not seen GHOST WORLD--it feels a bit proto-hipster-ish to me--but I adore Zwigoff's CRUMB documentary, plus the added attraction of Nora Birch makes the former a film I'm still interested in seeing.

I've been kicking myself for years for missing an opportunity I had when I was a student at UF to attend a screening of the movie with a talk by a key person behind either the movie - director Zwigoff, or the original comic's creator, I forget which. I still haven't seen it, but I think my wife's a fan.

IMO the only film in this series worth seeing more than once.

I'm guessing you haven't seen the most recent, Shin Godzilla, yet. It's... atypical, and I think it might be right up your alley. I loved it myself (though, full disclosure: one of my two most Godzilla-loving friends reeeaaally disliked it).

I'm very glad to have this one (Criterion's Godzilla) in the home library. It's actually my wife's copy - I gave it to her for either Christmas or her birthday a year or two ago, I forget which - but individual ownership of the movie discs has become pretty meaningless in our house, at least of the things we both like, so there it is.

This is for Member, JOE E.
Instead of waiting for those semi-annual Barnes and Noble sales for your Criterion Blu-rays, have you considered looking in at BLURAY.COM? Every day there are new titles, (if you click the tab 'Newest Deals'), that are on sale at Amazon. I've found almost all my Criterion Blu-ray titles in my home library advertised at Blu-ray.com. I'm expecting Criterion's 'RICHARD III' on Wednesday.

I've looked at Bluray.com before, but mostly just to learn about title availability, see what's different between editions in different regions, etc., rather than to look for specific sales and whatnot. Thanks for the tip!

According to the Wikipedia page, Criterion have not done a "Three Reasons" video since June 30, 2015.

However...

...to those of us in the US and Canada, Criterion now offers the Criterion Channel, a streaming service of the label's DVDs and accompanying bonus features. They are attempting to fill the monstrous void left by the elimination of Filmstruck ("thanks", Turner!)
