I have a hard time liking Laugh-In because it's the show that killed Star Trek. Trek famously triggered a massive letter writing campaign when it was cancelled after it's second season, a show of solidarity amongst fans that had been unheard of before. The network was impressed, and overturned it's decision, renewing it for a third season. They went to Gene Roddenberry and gave him carte blanche to do whatever he wanted with the show, and gave him the best time slot on the schedule, after Laugh-In. If that had happened, Star Trek might have been on TV for another 15 years. BUT, Laugh-In would have to move one half hour. They refused to move. They had too much clout, so the network had to recant at the last minute, and scheduled Trek at the worst slot on the schedule. late Friday at 10:00. Roddenberry walked, the show's third season bombed, and that was that. Sock it to me indeed.
