I recently did my semi-annual cd store buying binge. One thing I was looking for was AI, in its original release. "No problem," I thought, "There's ALWAYS plenty of JW in the used bins. I should make sure to look for THE BFG as well."

Well, blow me if I didn't find a single danged copy of either.

Nor did I see a used copy of Giacchino's Williams impersonation, a shoe-in since everyone probably thinks it's JW who wrote it, and it probably got as big a push as anything JW wrote. What the....????

Time was when JW wrote something gigantic, a gigantic label put it out, a gigantic quantity got pressed, and after a year or so there'd be a bazillion copies in the used bin. No more.

Criswell Predicts....

... that more than one person will think the thread title is "The DEATH of (John) Williams" and start yammering, yammering, yammering on that topic.

Actually, I thought it was "The DARTH of (John) Williams", another statement about how "The Imperial March" is supposed to be so great... wink

Of course. big grin

In all seriousness, "THE BFG" was notoriously hard for me to find even when it was NEW. (I can't speak for other people.) And yes, except for several copies of the expanded "CLOSE ENCOUNTERS..." which I came across in my local shops in recent months, there has been a "dearth" of Williams recently...

I was doing a lot of traveling last summer for work and couldn't find a single new copy of The BFG in ANY brick and mortar store-- across two states. Surprised yet not surprised.

I had the same problem finding "THE BOOK THIEF".

You actually found a record/CD store! Where?

The BFG was the first commercial Williams CD release I could not find in-store in Australia. Not just my local stores, but searching their sites online for stock in their other stores turned up zilch. Plenty of Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, and compilations. Even some Lincoln, Book Thief, and Jaws. But no BFG. Had to buy my copy from overseas.

Makes me wonder if the local retailers thought, "Lincoln and Book Thief didn't sell well. Let's only focus on the franchises and compilations. The true believers will get their fix from online specialists."

Pretty much. Gone are the days of record or CD browsing for lost treasures. Admittedly, for me anyway, I bought every John Williams release on day one so apart from older nuggets like HEIDI, I wasn’t particularly expecting to be surprised by what I found.

What I do recall is seeing six million knockoff recordings of STAR WARS or equivalent hits made by artists such as “The Hollywood Symphony.”

Whew, I thought you were going to say John Williams was fired from The Last Jedi because of cost cutting measures.

If you live in or near Tampa, Florida, The Sound Exchange has no dearth of JW or anything. They have 3 locations, soon to be two:

    https://www.soundexchangetampabay.com/index.php/sound-exchange-to-create-new-superstore-location-in-pinellas-park/

Having visited and shopped at the Tampa location a few years ago, I can attest to the vast film soundtrack and score
selection. It's not just the usual stuff you find among the used items, there are classics, favorites, rarities and the like. The prices are fair and the sales staff is knowledgeable. I came hope with about 15-20 items in my suitcase. Among my stash were a few JW releases.

As my niece has passed, I no longer travel to that area but I may visit some friends of hers next winter and will definitely stop by there.

Even though I caught it (dearth), the title of this thread is in EXTREMELY BAD TASTE.

I haven't bought a CD in a record store for YEARS, and I've really only bought a handful of CDs online in the same period. So I'm always fascinated when I read these "trends" in the ol' school recording buying habits. A shame there's been a dearth of Williams in regular stores. I've also noticed that the stuff I bought relatively cheaply in the 90s and early 2000s now go for several hundred dollars (like, say, THE EIGER SANCTION or DRACULA).

I'm really "out of the loop" in so many ways. Then again, I have a 100% complete Williams collection, so I haven't bothered to check very much.

These are the John Williams CDs my local HMV had in stock on Saturday - 1 x BFG (5GBP), 2 x The Force Awakens (4GBP), 1 x War Horse (9GBP).

Do you then mostly stream your music these days?
