INTRADA Announces:

TROY
Music Composed and Conducted by JAMES HORNER
INTRADA Special Collection 380

Released by Warner Bros. in 2004, Troy is the latest release in Intrada's ongoing efforts to reexamine and expand the work of James Horner. For Troy, Horner composed one of the longest scores of his career, some two hours in length, all of it written and recorded in relatively short order to replace another score. The cues were amazingly well-spotted, appearing in the finished theatrical cut precisely where Horner intended them to appear, with very little editing or truncating of what was recorded during the sessions— a rather uncommon occurrence in film scoring, especially with scores of such extreme length. There is a wealth of previously unreleased music, and to prepare this Intrada 2-CD set, Intrada was provided access to all the final takes from the digital two-track scoring session masters made by Simon Rhodes at the Todd-AO Scoring Stage in Studio City, California. The sequence of music in this set follows that of the film with one exception. In keeping with Horner’s own original album preference, the orchestral portion of the end credits plays out of the climactic “Sacking Of Troy” sequence, followed by the song as a standalone track.

Customary for the composer, several of the cues are quite lengthy, encompassing a wide variety of thematic material and emotional content. There are several important themes and numerous smaller ideas as well. Even with such an array of melodies and motifs to work with, Horner followed his architectural norm by finding the heart of the overall story and building his music outward from there.

Troy was an ambitious attempt by writer David Benioff and director Wolfgang Petersen to recount the story of the Trojan War stripped of its mythological accretions. Inspired by Homer’s Iliad and, in part, Virgil’s Aeneid, the film features an all-star cast and realistic digital special effects on a scale that would not have been possible even a few years earlier. As the story begins, the ruthless Agamemnon (Brian Cox) has united the fractious kingdoms of Greece, and now sets his sights on the impregnable fortress-city of Troy, ruled by aged Priam (Peter O’Toole). Agamemnon’s brother Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson) has made peace with Trojan prince Hector (Eric Bana), but the pact shatters when Helen (Diane Kruger), wife of Menelaus, flees to Troy with her lover Paris (Orlando Bloom), Priam’s younger son. Agamemnon seizes the opportunity to besiege Troy, marshaling allies such as wily Odysseus (Sean Bean), mighty Ajax (Tyler Mane) and— most crucially—the legendary Achilles (Brad Pitt).

Just curious - which two tracks from the OST are not on this release?

If it's that gawd awful "wailing" music I can live without it. Instant buy and now I can pick up E.T. too.

We at JHFM (James Horner Film Music) have an exclusive review tomorrow that goes into detail about that.

All I can say is...and it's a spoiler:

Benjamin Britten.

Wiki says "War Requiem Sanctus". But was Horner or the studio sued? Seems strange Intrada would need a license from the Britten estate if it's on the OST. I know, more details tomorrow, just thinking "out loud"!

Are those guys here that were all like 'TROY is only missing a couple unimportant minutes from the beginning of the film"....you know, those guys, present? No? Hmmm...

Still tons of danger motif in the samples. Glad this finally got a full release for those who were begging for it.

So just answer me - do I really need to buy original album to get all music or I can buy just Intrada's version?
'Cause when I compare track-lists, I see that some tracks are differ (in duration etc.)...
Thanks smile

Is it okay to say I'm not so excited because this was "modern" Horner? Modern Horner didn't employ his motifs very creatively making his later day scores pretty repetitive to my ears.

I thank Intrada anyway for the hard work!

Excellent. I always enjoyed Troy. I can't wait to hear the expanded score, hopefully with improved sound.

(For the record, I would have been equally excited for King Arthur. Hopefully that one comes shortly down the road.)

We are not aware of any lawsuits but War Requiem is not in the public domain, so the music could have been licensed for the film's usage and the original album's usage, but as this is a reissue, perhaps the money was not there to re-license it once more.

We did not go THAT far with it, as it's just speculation and there was not much to elaborate on regarding that subject.

I can't imagine this being a better listening experience than the already stretched-thin original but it's nice that it's an option for those who want it.

Just curious - which two tracks from the OST are not on this release?

Just one track from the OST is missing: "Troy".
But this track consists of two tracks from the movie. The opening 30 seconds are the beginning of the over 2-minute long music for Helen and Paris and the subsequent scene on the ship between Hector and Paris.
The rest is the music for the shot of the Greek war ships and the Trojans' triumphant return to Troy. The first two minutes of that track (Achilles talking to his mother Thetis) are missing from the OST, but the full version can be heard in the end credits of the director's cut.
Both tracks seem to be missing from the Intrada album.

Not sure how I feel about this. I've always been somewhat mixed on the score. Though it's perhaps a sad reflection on the state of modern film scoring that this sounds more pleasing than I remember.

The omission of the cues that make up Track 2 ("Troy") from the OST is very disappointing, I must say. frown

I'll admit my heart leapt for a split second when I thought this was an official release of the other Troy, but alas.

I agree with most of this, with exception of the omission of the cues. I really have no love for this score and hence their omission makes no difference to me.

I am curious about this release. There are far better epic scores not only in the middle of that decade but in the whole decade. For me this is one of Horner's weakest scores and I'd rank Troy just above 300 at the bottom of my list of epic scores for the 2000 - 2010 period.

As this was probably the best opportunity for any label to inquire about Yared's Troy, did Intrada ask whether it was possible to release it in conjunction with Horner's score or separately? Did Intrada initially seek to release the Yared/Horner scores together and was refused?
