I don't know if any of you follow my webcast Celluloid Tunes (I just updated the webcast's thread with the latest episode, which you can find at http://celluloidtunes.no/celluloid-tunes-52-danny-elfman-in-vienna-16th-international-edition/ )

In my interview, Elfman revealed that he's working on a piano quartet with the Berlin Philharmonic, and I think this was an exclusive piece of news.

So yet another Elfman concert work to look forward to.

That is excellent news, thanks for sharing (and I shall have to try out your podcast!). I love Serenada Schizophrana and Rabbit & Rogue so another concert work would be terrific. Here's hoping his promised violin concerto sees the light of day soon too...

Re the thread title. You could drop the 'with' or use w/ to fit in Philharmonic.
Also, capital Q for quartet will make it look better too.
Now, your homework for the weekend Thor will be... smile

So yet another Elfman concert work to look forward to.

Can we really say that? "Another" meaning his fourth piece all together after his overture, concerto, and serenade?

Iris and Rabbit are non-film things but aren't concert works. In any case I'll take what I can get. But best case scenario he's up to Opus 6 at 64 years old. Shostakovich was 16 when he wrote his opus 6. Korngold was also about 16 when he was at Op.6.

And I don't think this is apples and oranges because Shostakovich wrote at least 35 film scores, and Korngold had at least 20.

Smaug is kind of ignoring Elfman's long history as a singer/songwriter with Oingo Boingo etc. May not be "concert" works except of course rock concerts are concerts. For musicians, such distinctions are arbitrary at best, as are genres these days. It's producing music that counts, and he's been doing it for what, 40 years?

A piano quartet is chamber music, so I'm confused by this. Is it a piano quartet to be played by members of the Berlin Phil or something with orchestra?

My understanding is that it's supposed to be played by the Berlin Phil, as in a commision. We'll have to see if it's going to be recorded too.

And you're right, Smaug, that Elfman is a "late bloomer" when it comes to concert works, even though he did some quasi-concert works in the 70s (like Piano Concerto 1 1/2, although it's mostly adaptation). I guess a more precise description would be "music written for its own sake", whether that's Boingo stuff or more orchestrally oriented pieces.

My guess is that the commission comes from or on behalf of the "Berlin Philharmonic Piano Quartet".

Here's a bit of their blurb: "The Berlin Philharmonic Piano Quartet is one of the few existing ensembles of this instrumentation, in contrast to the better represented form, the String Quartet. This ensemble has existed as a Berlin Philharmonic chamber music ensemble since 1985...."

And here's their mention on the Berlin Phil's website: https://www.berliner-philharmoniker.de/en/ensembles/group/berliner-philharmonisches-klavierquartett/

The Berlin Phil has a lot of associated chamber groups, from the 12 Cellists to the Athenäum-Quartet.

Ah, thanks for the additional info, Sean. I was not aware of that. So a "sub section" of the larger orchestra, then?

Yes, think of it as orchestra musicians with a second gig as a chamber group. Piano quartets are not as common as the main chamber ensemble of this type, the string quartet. And there is not as much music written for them, but there are famous quartets by lots of composers - Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, etc. Even some composers with film score credits wrote piano quartets: Copland and Alfred Schnittke to name two.

I've seen various chamber ensembles culled from the Berlin Philharmonic, including the Wind Quintet and just the generic "Chamber Players" (or whatever).

But this is intreaging....while certainly there are plenty of mainly film composers who have chamber-type works, never would have thought to hear one from Elfman. Hope it gets recorded.

A couple of months later, but still no update on this. Which is weird, because Elfman told me he was going directly to Berlin from Vienna to either plan or work on this.

Who knows? You know the old expression, "The best laid plans of mice and men gang aft a-gley when Joss Whedon keeps calling."

'The group is touring with a new piano quartet, composed for them by American film composer Danny Elfman. Its five movements, most divided into film cue-size chunks separated by brief pauses, moved kaleidoscopically through many moods. The second movement (“Kinderspott”) was built on the universal childhood taunt “Nyah-nyah,” while the brief fourth movement (“Ruhig”) undulated smoothly. The influence of oOther composers’ influence shone through, too, with barbaric-edged Shostakovich in the third movement and folklike hemiola patterns, recalling Brahms or Dvorak, in the fandango-fast finale.'

I’m not ignoring anything. Elfman has chosen not to develop a large body of concert music. It’s his choice and I’m not complaining. Goldsmith and North and many others would have been great composers for the concert hall. I wouldn’t trade a violin concerto from North if it meant giving up one of his great film scores.

Elfman is doing ok. Philip Glass didn’t write his first Concerto till age 50, and his first symphony till age 55. I hope we get more concert works Fromm elfman. He’s got a lot to say. Even at age 64 he’s off to a good start.

I am an Elfman admirer and was not aware of these works. Ordered them straight away after listening to excerpts.

Great interview, thanks for sharing. I hope he does manage a concert piece a year as he hopes and that they all get a release!

No problem.

His Violin Concerto is being recorded in June, so hopefully that'll get released relatively soon.
