KALMANKANTAJA - Viimeinen Virsi II: Sairaan Sielun Sanat

One-man atmospheric/depressive black metal from Finland, actually the same artist behind the winter/dungeon synth Waeltaja. Despite Kalmankantaja (English: Deathbearer) having 20 full-length albums since 2013 (this one being from 2020, his 17th), this is the only Kalmankantaja black metal-style work that I own. It's very enveloping and trancelike, reminding of depressive and ambient BM acts like ColdWorld and When Mine Eyes Blacken. Of the album's three tracks (totalling 38 minutes), the last, an instrumental, is my favorite. I'm told that this release is more on the depressive side than the rest of his material, but even if it's not representative it's a great release nonentheless.

AU CLAIR DE LUNE - Diaphanous Deities

Second album from this post-black metal Italian outfit. It'd be very easy to simply describe this album as mid-period Alcest worship, but the sonic structure and approach is a bit different. The guitar leads are still the focus, and very plentiful, but the album has a lo-fi aesthetic that serves it well. Song structure is varied much more than I expected, with the black metal vocals just given enough of a stage before fading away to acoustic guitar, folk melodies, and emotive crooning. I haven't been a fan of Alcest for several years, but I'm keeping my eyes on Au Clair de Lune.

Thanks, doubledeuce! Any metal album with predominately blue cover art is worth a listen. I'll check it out.

Flipping channels, are you planning to pick up Blood Incantation's new ambient synth album? My copy should arrive on Tuesday. Looking forward to spacing out with those cats. cool

Um….wow! Thank you! Was not even aware they were releasing an ambient album. Truth be told, I haven’t even heard their brand of metal, just heard of them in name. But having listened to some quick samples, I ordered a copy! There’s a CD/BluRay digipak coming out later this month, the former containing a bonus 27-min track, the latter containing the first two CD tracks along with visual accompaniments. Sounds cool, thanks again! Would never have known about this otherwise, and I thought I followed the metal world pretty closely!

I love when bands do this type of thing, by the way. Huge fan of Wolves in the Throne Room, who released an all-ambient album Celestite back in the day. Most fans hated it, but I ate it up with a spoon. smile

You're welcome, amigo! I picked up Celestite only recently, despite having been a Wolves fan for many years. My (relatively recent) DS awakening was certainly a motivating factor in that decision. Wasn't disappointed!
