I got out the album again when I saw this was being released and had forgotten how crazy Leo Crow - The Confrontation gets. I’d throw that and Another Vision in and lose something else from your whittle.

So, this week I was revisiting Jerry Goldsmith's score for 1996's CHAIN REACTION by listening to the deluxe edition from Varese. I realized that this falls into the category, for me, of a number of 90's era Goldsmith scores that deserved albums longer than the initial 30 minute version but don't have enough variety to sustain 70+ minutes. Thus, I'm working on whittling down scores such as this and others (DEEP RISING, EXECUTIVE DECISION, THE HAUNTING, etc). I am starting with CHAIN REACTION, whittling it down to a 50-minute custom album version. I actually liked the non-chronological sequencing that Goldsmith did for the original album and wanted to honor that, while adding in some new highlights such as the cues "Be Safe" and "The Old House". I also took the three early cues "Invaders", "Too Late" and "Aftermath" and combined them into one track, they flow together nicely. Below is my non-chronological whittled down album version CHAIN REACTION (Custom Album Edit) - 50:41 1.Meet Eddie 2.Assassins 3.Be Safe 4.A Song/The Observatory 5.Invaders/Too Late/Aftermath 6.Getting There/C?Systems 7.Ice Chase 8.Open Minds 9.The Old House 10.No Solution 11.System Down 12.Open Door (Extended) 13.Out Of The Hole

Next up on my whittling list focused on some of Goldsmith's 90's era scores in their deluxe editions, is THE HAUNTING from 1999. The deluxe edition from Varese did reintroduce this score to me after having it mostly dismissed it for years. I was very engaged by its lyricism and especially the lovely theme for Eleanor. Still, I think it's best listening experience is somewhere between 30 and 70 minutes. Below is my custom album version, somewhat following Goldsmith's original sequencing, but opening with the "Theme from The Haunting", which is great as an overture. I also included both versions of "Finally Home", due to the differences they are both valid, placing the original album version smack in the middle and closing with the longer film version since it continues into the end credits. Lastly, I decided to "suite" the carousel cues together, so I took the standalone cue "The Carousel" and combined it with "Return To Carousel/What Do You Want", which works well since "The Carousel" presents this theme complete and then in "Return To Carousel/What Do You Want" it receives its more twisted variation. THE HAUNTING (Custom Album Edit) - 47:15 1.Theme From The Haunting/Home Safe 2.Terror In Bed / Nell's Room 3.A Place For Everything 4.The Curtains 5.Finally Home (Original Version) 6.Curly Hair 7.The Picture Album 8.The Carousel / Return To The Carousel / What Do You Want 9.Finally Home (Film Version)

OK, I've now been tackling Goldsmith's score for EXECUTIVE DECISION, from 1996. I've always been fond of this score, even from the initial 30 minute album release, finding it compelling in its very single-minded in its tense, militaristic approach. "All Aboard" was always my favorite cue, but the deluxe edition helped me find additional highlights, such as the cues "The Villa / Flying Lessons", "The Abduction" and "Initiating Approach". Yet, as with the previous examples, there is an efficient listening experience between 30 and 70 minutes as there can almost be too much sustained tension. Below is my 50 minute custom album edit. I mostly stayed in chronological order, retaining the cues found on the original album and augmenting with the aforementioned highlights and a few others. I made a creative decision to take the 1 minute cue "Executive Decision" and crossfade this onto the end of "Hold It", so that my album wraps up with a restatement of main map/mission theme. In addition, I combined "Happy Landing" and "Line It Up", swapping this order because those big fortissimo crashes at the end of "Line It Up" really make for an effective climax. EXECUTIVE DECISION (Custom Album Edit) - 49:11 1.The Map 2.The Villa / Flying Lessons 3.The Abduction 4.Waiting / The Take Over 5.The Remora 6.The Toy / No Choice 7.Initiating Approach 8.All Aboard 9.Drill Team 10.Do It 11.Pick It Up 12.Starting Over 13.Don't Do It (I edited out the "5 Minutes" portion of this track, around 2:05) 14.The Sleeper 15.Happy Landing / Line it Up 16.Hold It / Executive Decision

What did you ask the cues, Paul? Anyway, I always struggled getting into Alley Desplat's Oscar winning score to The Shape Of Water. I found the film to be a bit off-putting, with all that wanking in the bath and gruesome violence. Splash never resorted to such measures. And the score always sounded like some Amelie wannabe to me. But, if I start things off with track 3, the suspenseful ominosity of The Creature and introduce the french theme next (4.Elisa's Theme) and then offer the nice Underwater Kiss, followed by the lengthy, Goldsmithian The Escape, things really cook for me. So, without further ado, Ladies & Gentlemen, Boys & Girls, I give you, my Shape Of Water Go Pleasure Yourself whittled edition! 3. The Creature 4. Elisa's Theme 12. Underwater Kiss 13. The Escape 15. Decency 17. Overflow Of Love 18. Without You 19. Rainy Day 20. A Princess Without A Voice I think it runs around 30 minutes and if this edition doesn't get you off, nothing will.

What did you ask the cues, Paul? Your sense of humor is undiminished in the 30 (!) years since we first met, Kev!
