alright, you have me curious Thor. I am not saying that film is perfect, but I like it.
What are the issues with it?

It's been a while since I saw it, but it suffers a bit from the BOOK THIEF problem; it tries too hard with the melodrama ("Oscar bait"), thus becoming rather shallow and surface-oriented. With a bit more restraint, it could have been as powerful as the source material called for.

Not Horner's fault, though. I absolutely adore his Mahler-esque score, which is just gorgeous and restrained throughout -- except some pivotal moments when it feels deserved.

Interesting points, don't disagree that much, perhaps it needed merely a couple of scenes removed.
I found that ending pretty breathtaking, I was left aghast.

Ado brings up an excellent comparison when he mentions The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. I really liked that movie. I realize it has little action in it, and I'm not addicted to action. That movie's solid dramatics and a lot of tension (Literal and psychological tension) kept me glued to watching it. For me personally, Alone in Berlin was so very restrained or so very underplayed that I never really felt much tension. I just needed more dramatics I guess. I would give some examples, but I don't want to add spoilers. If you like it, then fine.

I haven't seen the film, but I just started the book a couple of hours ago, and there is certainly tension in the story so far as characters introduced go about their daily lives at the height of Nazi power. Am curious to see the movie, but yeah, I already have a sense that it's one of those books a film can't really do justice to.
