I was viewing this film last evening, something I do every couple of years or so because of the film's mega-length running time. I've a couple of questions about the music. The Main-Title / Overture (on the cd), as rich as it sounds, sounds as though it was 'shortened' from the film, to the cd. It sounds more... luxurious during opening titles than on the cd. Was it shortened? Also, in the scene that leads up to the,spoiler alert suicide of Burt Lancaster's character, we see a lengthy scene of a few dozen peasants waltzing among the Birch Trees. The music is being played by some sort of 'vase-like' flute. The music is so breathtakingly simple, yet memorable. What is that flute-like instrument, and was this music composed by Morricone, or is it some old country song standard? It's not on the soundtrack c.d.

Without hearing this the "vase-like" flute could be a pan flute, Zamfir's instrument, which he has used in the past. "Once Upon A time In America" comes to mind.

Concerning the flute-like instrument: It's an ocarina => https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocarina

Thanks, Orbital! When I entered the word 'Ocarina' and the film's title, I found the clip in question. As one of the peasants walks toward the camera, you can see part of the instrument up close. It was quite strange-looking to me, and it emitted a lively sound, which is why I was intrigued. If you click on this link, the short piece should play.

Many years ago when I was a kid, the ocarina was also called a "sweet potato" because of it's shape.

Isn't that a sweet-sound that the 'sweet-potato' makes, Roy?

I'm struggling to get through this film. Alternately dull and okay.

My interest.... uh..... increased upon seeing Gerard Depardieu and Robert DeNiro rassling, plus a little more....

Never mind those two losers - it was Donald Sutherland and Laura Betti who stole the show for me.

I just finished "Act One" and my goodness but I've seen every square centimeter of DeNiro's and Depardieu's bodies that can be found without a dental mirror.

3.5 hours in and oh my goodness but I'm tired of waiting for this to get more interesting.

Thank heavens the dvd started stalling out so that I had to skip chapters and am getting nearer the end.
