Stories I read said they had a huge nationwide search for a kid to play the young boy, and they never found anyone Spielberg was happy with, which led him to halt the production in early 2017, only weeks before it was to have started. They had already run ads in the trades announcing a Christmas 2017 release: After this production was called off, The Post was quickly slotted into its production dates and release date. It was always intended that he would shoot something during the lengthy post-production of Ready Player One, The Post simply replaced Mortara to fill a hole in the schedule. I find it funny that some news articles have talked about it being extraordinary that he was shooting a film while in post on another, he has done this many times before. I'm sure Spielberg will return to Mortara soon, he has done this before, with Minority Report for example.

I know Spielberg has been attached to many a project that either never happened, or he ended up just producing. I hope he makes this one, especially as director.

Cleaning out boxes a few years ago, I came upon a copy of Variety from the late '90s that I have no idea why I'd saved. In searching for a clue as to why I'd put it in a box, I read one splashy movie announcement after another – some in articles, some in ads – and they all had one thing in common: Not a single one of them had ever been made. I think this one has a MUCH better chance of being made, since there's a script by Kushner. I suspect we'll see it in a year or two.
