Attention U.S. TCM Subscribers: If by chance one hasn't seen the explosively confrontational The Wild Bunch, remedy that Monday, September 16 (2019) at 9:15pm PST. For those who have, please see my review Opening Up a Treasure: The Wild Bunch as to why it was, and still is, one of America's finest contributions to the cinematic arts. (This post has been updated to reflect TCM's Monday night showtime. Thanks to all who have commented below). http://thecinemacafe.com/the-cinema-treasure-hunter/2013/6/30/opening-up-a-treasure-the-wild-bunch

The film is a bloody masterpiece in every sense of the word. I looked at it on New Years Eve. There's a great architecture to the film, three big set pieces, the bank robbery at the start, train robbery in the middle & bloodbath at the end (& so may great scenes in between). There's an early scene at night where Pike & Dutch are talking & Pike says something like, I'd like to make big score & back off. Dutch answers, Back off to what? There's no answer, they don't really have a future & they know it. The last little dialogue scene before the shootout is brilliant: Pike - Let's go. Lyle - ...Why not! There's enough meaning in those four words to fill a thick book. The Blu-ray was fine for its time, but it's really showing its age now. It all looks a bit "electric" to my eyes, over sharpened & over processed & the colour seems too red/magenta on a lot of scenes (it improves a lot from the train robbery on). This great film really needs a new 4K scan direct from the OCN for a more organic film look, maybe with UHD discs Warner will re-visit it (they may have done it already).
