Austin Wintory writes a blog on medium, and recently wrote about his attempts to become the composer for Star Trek Discovery.

Here's a video collecting some of his great demo work.

Here's the Next Frontier theme by Wintory:

Learned about it from Trekmovie.com's article today about it:

It's there's room on that LLL set collecting Trek tunes - I'd love to see that Next Frontier on there. It's lovely. wink

I really wanted to connect with these, but I just couldn't. Same with the Cliff Eidelman demos. Interesting to hear them, though!

I don't know what it is that I didn't like, but it felt too busy? I also don't like Russo's because it's too obvious and simple, so there's no pleasing me.

The performance and mix left a lot to be desired too. Heard a lot of pitch issues and thin thextures, maybe also the orchestration.

I’d be curious whether Bear McCreary submitted a demo

I'm also not feeling this one. I know a lot of people just LOVE Wintory but I've yet to hear anything from him I connect with, or that I feel distinguishes him from a lot of other similar "up-and-comers".

What, I suppose it's worth asking, is considered his career "magnum opus" thus far?

I think it's Abzu. Other people will say Journey but I didn't connect with that one as much.

For me it's The Banner Saga, but its beauty is rather stark/bleak, so I guess I'd say it isn't for everyone. But definitely unique, personal, powerful writing like you don't hear in many modern film scores.
