Lots of controversy. Seems most content providers have left the site. Doug the NC, doesn't own the rights to his own persona. So he sinks or swims with the CEO of the company.

There's some legitimate issues, though I also think a lot of pettiness on both sides.

The accusations:

(I just randomly picked one of many YT videos about this subject)

The response:

Just wow what a mess.

I could very rarely make it through thirty seconds of watching any Doug Walker review. Just an incredibly irritating persona with awful delivery.

Was he really any good? (serious question, looking past his delivery, were the content of his reviews actually good?)

I think he did a really good job analytically reviewing films. (Though I generally found his shtick funny) Not that I always agreed with his analysis. But it's something of a lost art. Most film reviewers are subjective instead of objective.

I only found out about this when Mike Jeavons (to whom I subscribe through YouTube) announced he was quitting Channel Awesome a couple of weeks ago. All the others leaving gave similar reasons. Lots of nasty politics behind the scenes here.

Hopefully it's the end of the Nostalgia Critic.

I don't want him dead, despite the thread title, or unemployed, but he needs A: stop talking about movies and B: stop trying to be funny. He's awful at both.

I've avoided watching or reading about the controversies until such time as Doug decides to address them. I suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle and that people are saying things that are only partially true or not true at all because when it comes to money and internet fame, they become petty as fuck.

I've watched damn near every single review he's done. I love watching them. Admittedly I don't enjoy many of the new ones as much as I did older ones, but they are still watchable and enjoyable to one degree or another. His delivery comes across more forced on a number of new reviews these days as opposed to older ones; a prime example being his second-to-last newest review: "Jack and Jill".

Classic reviews, in my personal opinion, include:
"Jurassic Park 3"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KN7zenPyOWw

"Swan Princess" (I love it)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjqO8aZf-Ok

And the -- hard to believe -- THREE Godawful animated Titanic films:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QD_oDUTkwa4

Honorable mention: "Foodfight!"

My all time favorite by a long mile was Pearl Harbor. He did one recently I thought was pretty good. Though it escapes me. What I don't like, but sadly seemed popular were the acting skits included in the reviews. I hated all that stuff. I just want him reviewing the film.

I also agree, there's probably a middle ground to all the controversy. I'm sure NC as a company did some sh*tty stuff, but a lot of the complaints sound like they come from 15 year old's.

All youtube personalities should be jettisoned out of the nearest airlock without hesitation.

Apparently, if the comments on his newest video are to be believed:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lXVfyYF2Ok

Doug has left, doesn't own the "Nostalgia Critic" IP, only one person is left and we may be mere episodes away from the death of Channel Awesome channel.

Trust me, theres been talk of fumigating the place more than once.

As to Nostalgia Critic, theres something really horrible about someone who talks "at" you - like a newscaster - about their opinion on a thing. This isn't someone who could make it in the "real world" with the schtick, so they market it on YouTube with an "act" or "name". The whole thing is so enormously stupid.

There's so much stupid sh*t in the real world that is successful. For one a stupid reality show where the star became the most powerful man in the world. YouTuber's fit right in.

I never thought I'd say I missed John Simon.

PS - and this is for Preston - I've christened my gallery room at the Chelsea Rialto "Mordaunt Hall".

Same here with me.
I wasn't really aware any of these "personalities" were a thing.
Having a webcam makes one a "reviewer"? Meh.
My only real use for YouTube is for sometimes researching music to buy, and catching up with Stephen Colbert each morning after the previous evening's show.
Apart from that, not a Hell of a lot for me on the YT.
