Costner did not decide this at all.

Sheridan did not deliver scripts when promised, the show was put on hiatus, and everyone contracted was waiting and waiting and waiting.

Costner accomodated his "Horizon" project to the "Yellowstone" schedule, but nothing happened on "Yellowstone" - so Costner actually shot two "Horizon" films during this downtime.

And then they blindsided him by telling the press he preferred to film "Horizon".

Now, in 2024, they are filming the 5B season of "Yellowstone" without him.

It´s just a terrible power play to cover up Sheridan's status of being totally overworked, leading to him neglecting "Yellowstone" in order to write all these other series for Paramount. And Paramount is protecting him because they need him to keep their hopeless streaming outlet attractive.

To blame Costner is the easy way out - and completely wrong.

The best way they could have dealed with this would have been to tell all the actors: okay, we can't do the next season for at least a year. You don't have to stick around waiting, go and do other stuff, and then next year we will come back with this schedule.

So let's stop spreading the bull about Costner being responsible. It´s Sheridan.

If the media/producers/Paramount lied, why didn't Costner sue them ?
He has been silent on the matter for over a year, and suddenly claims that it is not him, but them.
Coincidentally just as he is about to premiere his film...

I've never seen the show, but got curious upon seeing a few clickbaity headlines.

Sounds to me like the situation is closer to what Willgoldnewtonbarrygrusin describes than anything else - overall development on S5 sounds like it was repeatedly delayed with Sheridan trying to work on multiple shows at once and at least one strike getting in the way.

Hence an actor like Costner is forced to decide - does he wait for the showrunners to sort themselves out, or go and make something he wants to do?

I see this so often - a preconditioned response to a situation because someone loves a show/movie/actor/composer and needs to blame it on someone. Similar to someone being angry at a filmmaker that a composer wasn't given an assignment - and not stopping to consider (or admit) whether the composer themself just didn't want to do it.

Once again...

Costner has been silent on the matter for over a year, and suddenly, after a year, claims that it is not him, but them.

Why?
Why now?

Why did he remain silent? To not sour the relationship further, to not openly fight with a studio. Still with the hope of being asked back.

Now, people have been bombarding him with questions about Yellowstone, and he knew that he had to say something during the press tour for Horizon. So he gave that interview to Deadline which explained his situation.

Yesterday he publicly stated that he will not be back definitely after saying he hoped he will be back. Apparently, Sheridan put his foot down, probably to give other actors the clear sign: I will fire everybody if you go against me. So, McConnaughey, choose wisely…

I never watched the show, but I heard the Season 1 and 2 albums because I was always a Brian Tyler fan. I guess I have three more albums I need to listen to. big grin
