Another Steiner comedy score is THE LADY TAKES A SAILOR (sabotaged by stiff-legged Robert Douglas trying to do farce - UGH).
Robert Douglas is one of my very favorite villains. And like all the best villains, he always makes me laugh... just like sneering Basil Rathbone or devious Vincent Price or Mr. Detestable, Frank Thring. So I'd like to see Douglas in a real comedy, despite the "ugh" review. Is it shown on TV from time to time?
Wow funny you should mention Frank Thring--was gonna cite his performance in Ben-Hur. Shiftiest eyes this side of Nixon. Pilate, Herod...made no difference.
But otherwise, this is my go-to recording for dark, powerful music. Steiner is THE noir composer!
I agree David. This is one great Max Steiner box and shows another side to his film scores. I've been playing it often. I hope Ray will be able to issue some more Steiner in the future.
The cover image and box title were my choice, PFK. KEY LARGO is a great film but CAGED has developed a bit of a cult reputation. And it's one of my top ten favorite films going back to good ol' Million Dollar Movie!
This box title also has potential for an insider pun: "The D'Arc Side of Max Steiner"
