My friend and fellow Apes aficionado, Rory Monteith, known by his FSM handle, RoryR, died on March 30, 2018 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had recently become extremely depressed after losing his job, was uninterested in seeking treatment, legally purchased a handgun and took his own life. Last May, Rory accompanied me on the journey of a lifetime as we located and visited several remote filming locations deep in the Utah badlands northwest of Lake Powell used in the making of Planet of the Apes (1968)—several of these places, including the visually stunning Scarecrow location hadn't been visited by anyone since the crew finished shooting 50 years ago. I'm glad he was there to witness and participate in the adventure, Franklin Schaffner's masterpiece was Rory's favorite film since he was 8 years old. Rory was very generous, extremely bright and possessed a razor-sharp wit. I'll miss him.

I'm shocked to read this. Just what terrible torture one must have endured to end up taking one's own life. That is so sad, so desperately tragic - and it also shows that, behind all the masks we wear in social media (in Rory's case, it was an Ape), there's always a real person behind it, with all the triumphs, joy, sadness and moments of desperation which we all go through. But to finish it all with suicide. My God. chromaparadise, I don't know if you had much contact, if any, with his family, but if so, please pass on our heartfelt condolences from us here on the FSM Board.

I'm extremely shocked by this, and saddened as well. It's a loss for all of us, and I wish he could have known that and stuck it out.

This is a shock to hear and I'm sorry he was in such a bad state at the end. All the best to his family and you too chroma. Tough losing a mate.

Such a sad and tragic end to his life. I think we all remember his pessimistic tone in his latter postings on this board. To think he was just venting his inner frustrations and dark moods, due to his personal life circumstances, makes them all the more sorrowful. Mental health issues is a huge problem facing people today and it's sad that instances like this are more and more common. I hope you are at peace now Rory.
