My friend and fellow Apes aficionado, Rory Monteith, known by his FSM handle, RoryR, died on March 30, 2018 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had recently become extremely depressed after losing his job, was uninterested in seeking treatment, legally purchased a handgun and took his own life.

Last May, Rory accompanied me on the journey of a lifetime as we located and visited several remote filming locations deep in the Utah badlands northwest of Lake Powell used in the making of Planet of the Apes (1968)—several of these places, including the visually stunning Scarecrow location hadn't been visited by anyone since the crew finished shooting 50 years ago. I'm glad he was there to witness and participate in the adventure, Franklin Schaffner's masterpiece was Rory's favorite film since he was 8 years old.

Rory was very generous, extremely bright and possessed a razor-sharp wit. I'll miss him.

Sorry to hear that. You wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Very sorry to hear this. Rory was certainly passionate about all things simian. God bless.

Horrible news, being so depressed that you kill yourself doesn't bare thinking about. I used to enjoy his posts here & he used to post a lot over at Blu-ray.com.

I'm shocked to read this. Just what terrible torture one must have endured to end up taking one's own life. That is so sad, so desperately tragic - and it also shows that, behind all the masks we wear in social media (in Rory's case, it was an Ape), there's always a real person behind it, with all the triumphs, joy, sadness and moments of desperation which we all go through. But to finish it all with suicide. My God.

chromaparadise, I don't know if you had much contact, if any, with his family, but if so, please pass on our heartfelt condolences from us here on the FSM Board.

I'm extremely shocked by this, and saddened as well. It's a loss for all of us, and I wish he could have known that and stuck it out.

John, thanks for letting us know. I can only reiterate what everyone else is saying. I'm totally shocked at this awful news.

I was watching when he was pushing things on the board and got shown the door. I half guessed something must have been really wrong for him to have been that uptight. Maybe this goes some way to indicating just how internally wound up he must have been. You know, all you can do is watch from the parapet - it's not a good feeling.

This is a shock to hear and I'm sorry he was in such a bad state at the end. All the best to his family and you too chroma. Tough losing a mate.

Very sorry to hear this. I was frequently butting heads with RoryR, as I felt he had this irrational hatred towards almost anything and everything outside the few things he really liked from his formative years (APES, THE SAND PEBBLES and a few more). Especally all things contemporary. I did not know him personally, or the special circumstances for this, so it would be wrong for me to draw any evaluations based on his posts alone, but I felt it maybe was symptomatic of "something".

In any case, we've had some suicides and deaths among our membership over the years. If anything this shows the fragility of all of our minds in the face of heavy depression. My thoughts are with all the bereaved.

Good God, it's getting to the point where I am wary of opening the site every day for fear of what new horrible news it will bring.
Which is certainly not to imply that I will ever become blase or nonchalant whenever something like this happens.
Quite the opposite--this is as fresh a kick in the gut as every other passing was and will be.
I can scarcely believe it.

RIP Rory.

I can only repeat what others have said, this is shocking news and I'm very sorry. I think it's fair to say he was more divisive than me, and while we butt heads all the time, I enjoyed our interactions. RIP.

Very sad news. He was a fairly long term member I think?

Such a sad and tragic end to his life.
I think we all remember his pessimistic tone in his latter postings on this board.
To think he was just venting his inner frustrations and dark moods, due to his personal life circumstances, makes them all the more sorrowful.
Mental health issues is a huge problem facing people today and it's sad that instances like this are more and more common.
I hope you are at peace now Rory.

2010 or 2012, I think. Something like that, if I remember correctly.

That trip out to the POTA scarecrow location must have been amazing, like on another world.

Was looking to read more about this, but apparently no record of it on the internet.

Can anyone point in the right direction?

He certainly got to live out one of his biggest dreams before he passed away. For that I am happy for him.
