It seems the Oscars are indeed good for something after all. After the critically-worshipped Hayao Miyazaki anime feature Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (aka Spirited Away) won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film the other night, Disney, which had (barely) distributed the film in the US (in limited release, prompting criticism the studio was deliberately underpromoting the much-adored film in order to either avoid comparisons with its own, less-highly-regarded productions and/or avoid creating more of a general demand for non-Disney animated fare; more charitable appraisals speculated perhaps Disney just didn't know how to promote a film to which it didn't also control an extensive merchandising campaign), Disney has announced the film will get an 800-theater rerelease starting this Friday (up to now, its release peaked at 151 screens).

(I'm assuming they aren't putting it in all 800 theaters at once, given the lead time needed to make prints and book screens...)

This is terrific and welcome news. smile

I was stunned, stunned, stunned to see SPIRITED AWAY win the Animated Feature Oscar. I didn't think it was possible, being that the movie was:

a.) barely released at all, so no one saw it other than anime fans.

b.) foriegn

c.) dubbed into English

d.) foriegn

e.) didn't have characters who break into faux-broadway showtunes every ten minutes

f.) foriegn

g.) the main character didn't have anthropomorphic animal sidekicks, preferably voiced by Eddie Murphy or Whoopi Goldberg

h.) foriegn

i.) didn't have any fancy computer effects

j.) foriegn

k.) had a running time of a little over two hours, not ninety minutes.

Oh, and by the way, did I mention that the movie was made in Japan? Yup, it didn't even have the "Made in USA" pedigree.

In all seriousness, SPIRITED AWAY was far and away the best decision the Academy made last Sunday. Yeah, giving CHICAGO so many awards was cool, and THE PIANIST deserved its' Best Director and Best Actor awards, but the presence of SPIRITED AWAY leads me to believe that the voters actually watched the screeners they were sent for once.

(BTW, I have an Oscar screening DVD that I bought on eBay...and no, I didn't get it from Meryl Streep!)
