Apparently... I had mine on my right temple(About 20 years ago) and I thought it was acne, so when I got to my sister's, I took a coral sponge and scrubbed the hell out of them, until they bled. I ended up going to the doctor, and he prescribed some Domboro and codeine(sp?).. I didn't eat anything for several days.. just the codiene(sp?) and I ended up throwing up yellow liquid. I hope they don't rear their ugly head again!

Getting the shingles in the eye is very serious. A close friend of mine had them in his right eye. If caught early enough(which means diagnosed early, which is difficult) you can treat it with antiviral meds. If not, you're in trouble, for you can lose the eyesight permantly.I hope they caught Lettermans condition early. After the shingles disappears, many have what's called PHN, or postherpetic neuralgia. And that is a very bad position to be in, where your nerves have been damaged and you have severe pain, burning and itching that can linger for months. And its very hard if not impossible to control until they heal, if they do. And one more thing...if anyone has ever contracted chickenpox in their lives, you are at risk of getting the shingles. It hides in your spinal cord and for some reason, it will re-emerge through your nerve cells and explode out onto your skin. Its a very bad disease. I know, my mom went through it and a close friend of mine has as well. I feel for Letterman. I hope he gets well soon.

There was a period of several months during the mid-1980s, when any exertion or exposure to heat caused an extremely unpleasant, and simetimes almost unendurable, burning sensation on my back, arms, upper legs, buttocks, and chest, though there was no outward sign that there was anything wrong with me. I've wondered whether this might've been an attack of shingles (I did have chicken pox as a kid), though, from what several of you describe above, if that's indeed the case, it was comparatively mild. Tell me, is shingles recurring, or is it generally a one-time ordeal?
