Are their MOD DVD-R's copy blocked? I wish to make back ups of the ones I have.

They have that FBI, CIA, KGB, Gestapo warning on them, so I'm guessing yes.

Then there should be one of those "Mission Impossible" warnings, "This DVD-R will self destruct in 60 weeks".

I have two Warner movies (one Blu-ray, one dvd) that are almost a year old that I haven't even watched yet. I'll watch them before the 60 week self-destruction begins.
I'm going to count how many Warner movies I actually have.

FYI: I've had numerous titles of WB's on demand discs for eight years, and have not had any problems with them. I just played their Robert Benchley short films release, and my copy still plays flawlessly.

Add the 1999 DVD of SALEM'S LOT (1979) to that list of Warner Home Video discs that go kablooey over time. I used to watch it every Halloween, but last year the thing froze up and stopped playing for good.

Has anyone determined the cut-off date of release for these defective dvds? Are more recent releases, say the last ten years or so, also having this self destruct problem?

I just played a Warner Bros. Archive dvd for the first time, but I've had it for about a year. I froze at about 11 minutes. I tested it on my pc, and it froze again.

Here are links to other forums discussing Warner Bros. dvd failures.

The one that comes with all four Christopher Reeve movies plus Superman Returns and is about 14 discs. I think it's called the Ultimate Collection or something like that...

Thank you for your email. I am sorry to say that Warner Home Video is no longer distributing this title; therefore I am unable to help you with an exchange. I apologize for this inconvenience.

Kind regards,

Happened to me with many of the R1 double-layer Warner disks. It's a true shame.

Girl Crazy
Kismet
Hit The Deck
That Midnight Kiss

All are a mess...

It's getting to be that I need a separate garbage bin for all the WB DVDs I'v thrown out, for all their skipping and freezing.

MCQ (1974): Disc won't even load in regular dvd player, but plays on my Blu-ray. However, the vintage featurette will not play on the Blu.

The Yakuza (1975): Disc loads on regular dvd player, but not the "Promises to Keep" vintage featurette. Didn't try playing the film itself. Film plays fine on Blu, but once again the featurette will not.

------

Night Moves (1975): Film and vintage featurette play fine on Blu; haven't checked on regular dvd player.

Point Blank (1967): Film and bonus features all play fine on Blu. Didn't try regular dvd.

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973): Both the 2005 and 1988 Turner Preview cut play fine on Blu.

Are the DVD's on demand copy protected? I paid a lot of money for the three Marine Boy sets and feel the need to back them up!

According to the Home Theater Forum, the problem afflicts Warners DVDs produced at the Pennsylvania replication center in approximately 2006-2009. Unfortunately, there's no way to determine which DVDs these were before purchase.

Some further info:

Warner manufactured their DVD discs at Cinram's plant in Olyphant, Pennsylvania until 2010. But in 2010, Warner changed to Thomson/Technicolor's Mexico plant.

The Olyphant, Pennsylvania Cinram plant had IFPI facility codes 2U** and (possibly) also 2F**

The Thomson/Technicolor plant in Guadalajara, Mexico had IFPI facility codes KK**

There have also been a few defective discs with IFPI facility code 60**, which is the former Cinram facility in Toronto, Ontario in Canada, which now appears to be closed.

I bought a 2005 Warner Bros. tv dvd set years ago, and played only episode. Last week, I tried to play it again and the menu would not work.
I found an article by a professional reviewer who said the tv dvd set is a dual-side disc (episodes on both sides of the disc) and were prone to having playback problems. They were replaced by a single-side dvd set in 2012---now both sets are longer on the WBshop website.

Many years ago, I had a Warner Bros. dual-side dvd of THEM! and THE BEAT FROM 20,000 FATHOMS which developed a freeze problem. Warner Bros. replaced it with a one-side dvd set.
